Scientific Experiment

Design your experiment

    1. Establish a purpose. Why are you doing the experiment? What do you want to learn?

    2. Research your topic. What information do you need to know in order to perform your experiment?

    3. Generate a hypothesis. Explain what you think will happen in the experiment and why.

    4. Identify your control group and variables. How will you determine if your test group is affected by the changing factor?

Perform your experiment

  1. Gather the materials you will need to perform your experiment. Record all of your materials (with exact amounts if possible) on a piece of paper or in a notebook.

  2. Record your data. Data comes in all forms, including observations (what did you see?), numbers (examples include height, weight, volume), and pictures!

  3. Draw a conclusion. What does your experimental data show?

Present your findings

Make a poster to explain your experiment! Your poster should include the following

  • Title

  • Purpose

  • Hypothesis

  • Background Material

  • Materials and Procedure

  • Data (charts, graphs, pictures)

  • Discussion of Results

  • Conclusion

Remember that table space is also available to showcase key observations that cannot be included on your poster.
