Since 2015, Staten Island's public school community has come together for an evening of dance, chorus, instrumental music, and theatre performances. Attended by students, families, teachers, school leaders, and community members, this event brought thousands of Staten Islanders together to celebrate the talent and skills of our students. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Staten Island performing arts students continued to practice and perfect their craft, guided by their innovative dance, music, and theater educators who created new and ingenious ways of teaching the arts virtually. This showcase features three dynamic online performances created by cross-borough virtual dance, music, and theater ensembles with students ranging from K- 12 grades. In addition, virtual performances produced during the 2020-2021 school year by our schools are also showcased. Congratulations to all the students, teachers, school leaders, and families. Enjoy the show!
Heart of Hope features the choreography of 27 N.Y.C D.O.E. student dancers spanning Kindergarten through 12th grade from schools across Staten Island. Under the direction of their dance teachers, each student's created movement sentences with motifs of hope. Performed to Piano Flight, the piece tells a story of our connectedness, despite physical distance, and the hope and joy we feel as we look towards the future.
Congratulations to our dance students and schools on this remarkable production! Thank you to our dance educators whose commitment and passion gave this idea wings. A special thank you to Frank Barranca who graciously lent his talents and expertise in the moving image to make this video production possible.
With the support of their theater directors, 22 student actors/vocalists came together to perform Virtually Ever After, a modern-day spin on classic fables set in an online world, and Rockin' Robin. Filmed using Zoom, students brought each of their characters and the lyrics to life. Although they have never met face-to-face, these students became a true ensemble, supporting and cheering each other on. They are proof that with commitment and passion, the show will go on- ever after!
Congratulations to our musical theater students and chorus students on this wonderful performance. Thank you to our theater directors who's collaboration, dedication, and creativity made this production a reality. A special thank you to Diane Zerega and Tina Barone who generously shared their expertise, love of theatre, and time to bring this show to life.
In April of 2021, 35 band and chorus students from 3rd through 12th grades from across Staten Island came together to perform virtually Higher and Higher, by Gary Jackson, Carl Smith, and Raynard Miner, arranged by Keith Waage. Guided by their musical directors, these students honed and perfected their work, transforming every available space in their homes into virtual concert halls. Their performance embodies the spirit and words of Higher and Higher, that united through love- we can conquer anything and reaching heights never achieved before.
Congratulations to our music students and school communities on this wonderful performance! Thank you to our musical directors who's dedication and commitment make it possible for every child to succeed. A special thank you to Paul Corn and Keith Waage for all their support. We are deeply grateful to Keith Waage for his musical wizardry in arranging and producing a piece with such a wide age range of student musicians.
