Panelists
The current research landscape will be weighed in three panels of speakers:
- Panel 1: Direct and Indirect Learning from Digital Media Symposium (Chair: Koeun Choi)
- Panel 2: Digital Media and Social Cognition Symposium (Chair: Rebekah Richert)
- Panel 3: Research Application and Translation Panel Discussion (Chair Heather Kirkorian)
Our first panel, chaired by Dr. Koeun Choi, will address Direct and Indirect Learning from Digital Media. In this panel, Dr. Patricia Ganea will provide a theoretical perspective on relations between children’s experience/symbolic reasoning and digital media. Dr. Lauren Myers will present the results of studies examining the “supported video chat deficit”. Finally, Dr. Rebecca Dore will consider how interactivity plays a role in preschoolers' vocabulary learning from digital media.
Our second panel, chaired by Dr. Rebekah Richert, will focus on Digital Media and Social Cognition. Presenters will include emerging scholars in the areas of children’s development of stereotypes from television characters (Dr. Fashina Alade) and the impact of parent-child interaction on children’s learning from digital media (Dr. Gabrielle Strouse), as well as a senior scholar examining factors related to learning (or lack of learning) prosocial content from fantastical television (Dr. Angeline Lillard & Sierra Elsen).
The workshop will conclude with a panel discussion on Research Application and Translation. This panel, chaired by Dr. Heather Kirkorian, is a new addition to our 2019 workshop schedule, based on the active and enthusiastic discussion at the end of our 2017 workshop. Each panelist will give a brief overview of their experience, after which panelists will engage in an open discussion, answering questions from the panel chair and attendees. Dr. Glenda Revelle worked in the children’s media industry (e.g., Sesame Workshop) and continues to study educational games as a visiting associate professor. Dr. Lynn Liben will compare/contrast perspectives from researchers and educators regarding effective digital media practices. Dr. Ellen Wartella will draw on extensive experience working with policymakers and consulting for media creators.
