This is my honor to welcome all of you to 2018 Wenzao International Conference on Southeast Asian Studies (Wenzao ICSEAS). Thanks to the team led by Professor Herlin Chien, our former Director of Center for Southeast Asian Languages Teaching, the presenters and audience from over 20 countries had great academic sharing and communication in 2017, the first Wenzao ICSEAS. And in the coming 2018 conference, I believe we all together will have deeper and wider ideas, perspectives, and insights exchanging again.

Wenzao, founded in 1966, is the first and only one higher education institution well known for its commitment to excellence in foreign languages teaching and research. As time goes by, our university is to multiply to the related fields, including international business, international affairs, and communication, etc. and have been providing Southeast Asia language courses such as Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai since 2008. The Center for Southeast Asian Languages Teaching was established in 2014 to deliver the variety of Southeast Asian languages offered and include political, social, economic or cultural fields of the curriculum design. We are so excited for over 1000 students to learn Southeast Asian languages every year since 2015. Based on Wenzao's excellent foundation of language teaching, and encouraging from the government's New Southbound Policy, our Master program in Southeast Asia Studies launched in September 2018 and the following is new Department of Southeast Asian Studies in Fall 2019.

The initiative of the Wenzao ICSEAS is by hosting a 3-day international conference and publish an edited book from selected presenting papers annually to create opportunities of sharing, learning and enhance cooperation between international presenters and local audiences. There are about one hundred paper-presentation will be delivered during 2018 Wenzao ICSEAS. We believe it is going to be a gourmet feast of knowledge.

We all are in this fast-changing world. Let’s explore the transitions and transformations of Southeast Asia together. Come and join us in Kaohsiung, the 2nd largest city in Taiwan for an exciting academic journey and meet new friends from all over the world.

As Former Director of Master Program in Southeast Asia Studies (MSEAS) and Center for Southeast Asian Languages Teaching (CSALT) at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, I sincerely welcome all of you to the 2nd Wenzao international conference on Southeast Asian Studies ----- 2018 Wenzao ICSEAS ---- held in this campus.

Wenzao, founded in 1966, is the only and well-known higher education institution in Taiwan that specializes foreign languages and languages related academic subjects, such as international affairs, international trade, communication, etc. Since 2008, our university has been offering Southeast Asia language training including Vietnamese, Indonesian or Thai to our students and citizen in the wider southern Taiwan. In 2014, Center of Southeast Asian Languages Teaching was established to further expand the variety of Southeast Asian languages offered and include political, social, economic or cultural aspects of the curriculum design. Soon our new Master program in Southeast Asia Studies will be officially launched in Fall 2018. It is indeed an opportune time to call for such conference, following our 2017 Wenzao ICSEAS experience, and gather again both domestic and international scholars who share common interests in understanding this rapidly developing region.

By hosting a three-day international conference and publish one edited book from selected papers presented in conference annually, we hope to create opportunities for both the international paper presenters and local audiences to share, to interact and to learn inspirational knowledge on the rising Southeast Asia.

The sea of knowledge is waiting for all of us. Please join us in Kaohsiung, the 2nd largest city in Taiwan for another exciting academic journey and be ready to make some new friends from all over the world.
