Moldflow Vibe Check

We conducted an experiment to compare the accuracy of an injection molding modeling software, Autodesk MoldFlow, to an actual production run of 400 yoyo components. The diameters of a circular part were measured in three different locations to account for axial shrinkage differences, as shown in the diagram below.

These diameter measurements were averaged across all 400 parts. The tooling diameter for the main body was 2.384". The average main body diameter from the production run was 2.355", with a standard deviation of 0.021", so shrinkage was (1.2 ± 0.8)%. MoldFlow predicted that shrinkage would be 1%, which is within a standard deviation of the calculated shrinkage. This reaffirms our trust in MoldFlow's capabilities as a predictive software.
