Bell Lyre / Marching Bells     

(All gradings to be agreed)  Taken from BB Credits handbook and (updated by me 2023)

Grade 1. 

Play the following correctly

• Scales of C,  F,  Bb,  G  &  D

Tune

• Play the tune: to the correct tempo 

  • O when the Saints

• The Bells part of the Bugle Tune

  • General Salute

• The Bells part of one Bugle March

  • i.e. Saint Louis Blue,  Alexandra, Shamrock, The Anchor Hymn

Other

• Give a brief history of the Bell Lyre / Marching Bells. 

• Show Basic Knowledge of Care and Maintenance of Instrument

• Demonstrate correct Bells at-ease, at Attention, Band Ready, Band Steady, Fall-Out

Grade 2.

Hold Grade 1 and ...

• Show knowledge of elementary theory of music, including comparative values of notes and rests, major key signatures, time signatures and principal expression marks

Play correctly a piece of their own selection

• Play a major bells tune: 

  • i.e. Dambusters, Tipperary/Pack up your Troubles, Great Escape

• The Bells part of a 2nd March

  • i.e. Shamrock, Stedfast, Georgia, Alexandria

• Read and play at sight a simple tune

On Parade

• Demonstrate during practices, correct marching and in time with the band

• Attend at least one Parade where the Band Performs

Grade 3.

Hold Grade 2 and ...

• Show knowledge of more advanced theory of music, including tones and semitones, relationships between major and minor keys and their key signatures, alternative fingering and elementary harmony. 

• Play correctly a 'significant' solo piece of their own selection

• Read and play second parts of a major Band Tune

• Read and play at sight at the correct tempo any drum music one phrase in each of 2/4,  3/4,  4/4  &  6/8 time

Other

• To give instruction to a Learner Bells player in playing/drill and maintenance of the Bell Lyre / Marching Bells

• Show In depth Knowledge of Care and Maintenance of Instrument
