Learning to Read
Learning to Read
In first grade, our most important goal is to learn to read, so that we can ultimately read to learn. The essential pillars of reading development include:
Alphabet knowledge
Phonemic awareness: the understanding and ability
Phonics
Sight words/high frequency words
Fluency
Comprehension
Morphology
This year we will use the science of reading to guide our literacy instruction. The science of reading is a body of research collected by teachers, psychologists, and other experts about best practices for teaching reading to students. Explicit instruction is a key component of the science of reading.
