1937

In 1937, the location was chosen for the replacement to the Upper Free Bridge in Peoria, this replacement we would come to know as the McCluggage Bridge.  The bridge would not be completed for another five years.  In the article announcing the bridge location, it is also mentioned that a new Route 24 woud pass two miles north of Washington and continue to Eureka.  This constitutes the first-ever mention of the Washington Bypass.

In 1937 a Mastodon tooth was pulled from a gravel pit west of town.  It was put on display in the window of the Washington Reporter on the square for people to see.
