Introduction

A New Day Dawns

Your story begins in the 19th century, in a mining village near Banjarmasin on the Island of Borneo in Asia.

The Barito river moves slowly before you, curving gently through the land. Rays of sunlight causes the ripples of water to gleam and shimmer, reminding you of the diamonds excavated near your village.

Apart from the sounds of the ebbing gentle waves of the Barito river, you hear the distant buzz of traders and vendors on their perahu.

This river is one of many in Banjarmasin. In the city of rivers, the rivers act as arteries, enabling the Banjar people to survive. Not only was it a mode of transport, but it was a place where trade took place.
