You decide to attend the family gathering, discussing matters regarding your upcoming arranged marriage. A year later, you get married to to a lovely girl from an established family.
The both of you are excited with the thought of starting a lovely family and new life together. You are eager to share trading secrets with your children and feel at ease being able to pass down your wealth and traditions to future generations.
Your beautiful wedding follows age-old Banjarese traditions. There, you and your wife-to-be are treated like royalty for a day. Following the Bausung tradition, both of you are carried on the shoulders of dancers instead of walking down the aisle as your guests clap and cheer. They throw freshly cut flowers at you as sweetness wafts through the air.
The Banjarese marriages inherited characteristics from Indian and Javanese marriages, such as the extensive use of flowers as decoration, and the numerous rituals that resembled each other.
A few traditions/rituals include:
Banjar Galung Pancaran Matahari: The traditional wedding attire of the Banjar. The couple is dressed in gold, and the bride, draped with jewelery and flowers, wears a golden crown on her head. ("Busana Pengantin Banjar")
Bausung: The bride and groom are carried down the aisle on the shoulders of dancers. They are also accompanied by dance and music performances. (“Banjar Akbari & Haura")
Badudus : A bathing ritual for the bride, where she is bathed by five to seven older women, who are usually her relatives. The bathing water used is infused with flowers, citrus fruits and coconut water. (Diercie)
