Looping -- same teacher for 4 years

Looping is another way to organize school.

Looping asks us to look back at a practice in elementary school that often works and many schools use

Many administrators and teachers are stuck on the idea that "a fresh start" is important.

Mark Sanchez, vice president of the school board and a third-grade teacher, said students who must walk past the mural during the school day don’t have a choice about seeing the harmful images. “Painting it over represents not only a symbolic fresh start, but a real fresh start,” he said. (from "George Washington was a racist")

However, when we loop, the student does not have a "fresh start" with a new teacher and a new school year. The teacher knows the child and the child's past work.

Looping is defined as a teacher spending two or more years with the same group of classroom students. We typically see looping classrooms in the 3rd to 5th grade range, but there is good evidence that looping is very effective with transition years, when students go to middle school or high school.
