and when I mean everywhere, I truly mean everywhere. In fact, you probably use embedded systems every day. As touched on in page '1. In our daily lives...', I had briefly touched on an embedded system that was near me, a multicooker in my own family home kitchen. From your own to your laundry and living room, chances are there will be an embedded system hiding somewhere in plain sight such as in home appliances, like my own multicooker or in healthcare devices that you might use such as pacemakers to even consumer electronics with your own smartphone! Hence, due to the sheer importance, efficiency and reliability of embedded systems, there's a strong need for them in the modern day. In this section, I'll be sinking deeper and deeper and explaining embedded systems in a specific industry, that being the smart home and smart devices industry.
Commonly seen in hotels and high end condominium complexes, smart door lock systems are increasingly growing in popularity due to not only the relief of knowing you can unlock your door if you forget your keys but also in terms of safety, smart door locks prove superior compared to their smartless counterparts. It can seamlessly integrate with your current home security system whilst providing enhanced protection such as requiring the use of biometrics, it also is pretty convenient as depending on the system, you can even open them with a voice command when you have your hands full.
Gradually, smart thermostats are becoming a staple in many households. In fact this year, the smart thermostat market is predicted to increase from $ 2.96 billion in 2023 to $ 3.58 billion dollars in 2024 (Smart Thermostat Market Share, Opportunities, Insights Report to 2023, 2024.). The reason why more and more people are preferring to incorporate these devices into their daily lives is simple. Not only do most smart thermostats have remote control and phone access, meaning you can change the temperature of your house or room whilst lying comfortably in bed but also because like most other smart home systems, these are energy efficient and can help you save a buck or two on utility bills.
Smart lighting systems are probably one of the most well known smart homes systems on the market and for good reason as well as these are quickly becoming user favourites. With the ability to turn the lights on and off with a clap or just your voice, say gone to the days where you were to lazy to get out of bed and slept with the lights on, thus affecting the overall quality of sleep. Furthermore, some smart lighting systems have features where you can change the colour of the lights, going from a bright white to a soft warm shade when you want to relax your eyes and body, creating a good ambiance. In addition, some systems have geolocation and scheduling functions, meaning the lights will turn on in your house when you're in close proximity to it.
Due to all the above explanations and systems we explored, it's clearly no wonder why embedded systems are becoming more prominent in our daily lives as they not only aid in convenience and energy efficiency but they also help users improve in their overall quality of life and supports them in keeping a calm peace of mind.
