ABOUT SAALAS
The South African Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SAALAS) is a non-profit organisation serving South African Scientists involved in the breeding, husbandry and welfare of laboratory animals, and also those individuals at secondary schools, tertiary educational institutions and state and privately owned research institutions using laboratory animals for teaching, research, the production of products and the testing thereof.
Mr Barney Reed
RSPCA
Barney has worked in the Animals in Science Department of the RSPCA since 2002. Before this, he gained a Master of Science degree with distinction in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of Edinburgh and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology (with Biology) from University of Exeter, and was employed in the government department (the Home Office) that regulates the use of animals in science in the UK. Barney’s work involves promoting the fullest implementation of the 3Rs, a good ‘culture of care’ within institutions, and effective processes of ethical review - advising on how the use and care of laboratory animals can be improved to reduce the impact on animals and advance standards of scientific research. Barney has led, or been involved in the organisation and delivery of numerous international training events on laboratory animal care and use in countries around the world. He has been an invited speaker at scientific conferences and events in countries including China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Netherlands, Italy, Estonia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Canada and USA.
He has served on the institutional Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Bodies of eight different UK research establishments across academia and industry, and has been an invited member of Expert Working Groups set up by the European Commission to help European Union countries implement the European law (Directive 2010/63/EU) on the use of laboratory animals. He was formerly a co-opted member of the council of the UK Laboratory Animal Science Association (LASA), and is a long-standing judge for the annual awards for the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research. Since 2016, Barney has been an appointed member of the national Animals in Science Committee, whose role is to provide independent, expert advice to the UK Government Minister of State for the Home Office.
