Geography

The GCSE AQA Geography syllabus (8035) is split into three main components: Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Geographical Applications.

YEAR 10 Paper 1: Living with the Physical Environment

Focuses on natural processes, landscapes, and the interactions between humans and the physical world.

• Section A: The Challenge of Natural Hazards

  • Natural Hazards: Tectonic processes, tropical storms (hurricanes/typhoons), extreme weather in the UK, and climate change.

• Section B: The Living World

  • Ecosystems: Global biomes and local ecosystems.

  • Tropical Rainforests: Characteristics, deforestation causes/impacts, and sustainable management.

  • Hot Deserts or Cold Environments: Physical characteristics, opportunities, challenges, and management (most schools study Hot Deserts).

• Section C: Physical Landscapes in the UK

  • Choice of two from: UK River Landscapes, UK Coastal Landscapes, or UK Glacial Landscapes (Rivers and Coasts are the most common combination).

YEAR 11 Paper 2: Challenges in the Human Environment

Examines global development, economic shifts, and urban growth.

• Section A: Urban Issues and Challenges

  • Global patterns of urbanization, rapid growth in NEEs (Newly Emerging Economies), and urban change/regeneration in the UK (e.g., contrast between a LIC/NEE city like Rio de Janeiro or Lagos and a UK city like London or Bristol).

• Section B: The Changing Economic World

  • The global development gap, strategies to reduce inequality, economic growth in NEEs, and major economic shifts in the UK.

• Section C: The Challenge of Resource Management

  • Overview of global food, water, and energy supply/demand.

  • In-depth study of one specific resource (Food, Water, or Energy).

Paper 3: Geographical Applications

Evaluates synoptic skills, critical thinking, and fieldwork techniques.

• Section A: Issue Evaluation

  • Critical analysis of a pre-released resource booklet (issued 12 weeks before the exam) based on a current geographical issue.

• Section B: Fieldwork

  • Assessment based on two compulsory fieldwork investigations (one physical geography enquiry and one human geography enquiry).

  • Unseen fieldwork scenarios and methodology testing.
