Semester 1 Scrolls

Week 20

2/17/19

On Tuesday this week, we had our House Joust. Mr. Li tested out everyone's design using a small bucket of water in the outside area of the lab. The seniors also participated. We ended up getting 4th place. Because we used PVC pipe, it was hard to use from a distance due to the weight. House Zenith and a senior house tied for first, and Surfrider is actually going to test out their designs. A picture of me, Brandon and Megan setting up our pole is to the left. Another thing that I did this week was go to EDA classes to recruit freshmen for Dynasty 4. I went with 3-4 other people to 3 classes and presented a slideshow about D-Tech. After the presentation, we took the class on a tour of the lab and talked about all of the machines. A lot of people seemed interested in applying for next year.

Week 19

1/31/19

This week we mainly worked on our design for the next House Joust. I came up a design that would hold the bag securely. A picture of the design in Onshape is to the right. It has two slots on either side to hold the two wires on the bag. My original idea was to have a hinge door on top to close the bag in, but Brandon had the idea of creating a dove-tail groove, so I went with that. The cylinder coming out of it is what will attach it to the PVC pipe that we have. We are also going to try and make it 10ft long, since when we went down to the beach, 5ft didn't seem long enough.

Week 18

1/24/19

This week was finals week. In D-Tech, we had another exhibition. I showed my coasters, house, pictures, phone stand and jewelry and a lot of people liked them. All the coasters that I made for my family are shown below. Everyone had cool things to show. The people on electronics had made a piano, my friend Megan made a cabinet for her Tae-Kwon-Do belts, and someone on 3D printing made a cool looking pot. The prompt for the next House Joust was also announced. We have to design something that can hold the sample bags that Surfrider uses at the end of a 5ft pole. A video of the Exhibition is linked to the right.

Week 17

1/17/19

I was out sick for most of this week and was only able to come in on Thursday. However, while I was out, I finished designing my house and was able to cut and assemble it. One problem that I ran into was leaving enough space for the parts to actually fit together. This was difficult for me for two reasons. One was that I made the house out of only sketches in Onshape instead of extruding them to represent the thickness of the wood. Second, I realized that the original sizing of the house was too big, but because I hadn't extruded anything, I couldn't scale it down in Onshape and had to scale it in Inkscape. So, while I was finishing the house, I had to remember that everything that I made was going to end up being half as big. Despite these complications, however, I am very happy with how it turned out. A picture of it is to the left.

Week 16

1/10/19

This week I made another necklace. The design is to the left. I made 4 different versions, 2 with blue acrylic and 2 with clear. I used bamboo for all of them. With each color, I made one with the wood around an acrylic flower, and one that was the opposite. My favorite is the one with clear acrylic around the wood flower. I'm probably going to keep it for myself instead of making it a gift.

Week 15

12/20/18

I cut the phone stand and coasters. I also designed 5 more coasters and found some pictures for my dad. The coaster designs are to the right. One of the flower coasters is for my grandparents in Florida. The other 2 flowers and the other 2 coasters are for my grandpa here. The two pictures are for my dad. He likes to surf, so I'm doing a picture of Rincon for him, along with a map of Ventura.

Week 14

12/13/18

This week I worked on Christmas presents for my family. I am making a phone stand for my mom, coasters for my brother and grandparents, and some pictures for my dad. I have finished the designs for the phone stand and 7 out of the 12 coasters. For the phone stand, its going to have a mandala on the front face and the support piece. It also has a hole that can fit her charger. The coasters for my brother include two pictures from Lord of the Rings, an eagle, and a mountain. The other three on there and for my grandparents in Florida. I will be making one more for them as well. A picture of the coaster designs are to the right. I am also making a necklace for my mom that has a mandala on a blue circle. I also made a tree necklace.

Week 13

12/6/18

I cut two more coasters this week. One was my dad's design with mountains, waves, and a sun, and the other was another mandala flower that I made. Other than that, I didn't cut much this week. I mostly focused on helping other people get their novice and helping them learn how the laser works. I am working on my mastery project in Onshape. It is a house that will be made out of wood with acrylic windows. A picture of what I have so far is to the left.

Week 12

11/29/18

This week we started on the laser cutter. Everyone in our house was able to pass the safety test and Brandon and I were able to make something. I designed some mandala flowers and cut around them to make a coaster. They turned out really well and I hope to make more in the future. A picture of all three of them is to the right. Coasters are actually really fun to make and aren't too hard either, so I might make more with something besides a flower as well. I also want to make jewelry out of the wood and maybe some epoxy. My mastery project is going to be a model house.

Week 11

11/22/18

We were able to finish the marble track over the weekend. We actually replaced all the foam board with recycled wood from my brother's backyard. Its a lot more sturdy and consistent. We had the track go around and around the base until it got to the bottom, where it went into a hole in a table. From there, a track took it into a U-turn which took into a long track that went along the back of the table. It then went into another track that took it the other way into a cup of flour that stopped the marble. We ended up getting second place in the competition with a time of 58.69 seconds. We were still able to get the machine we wanted though, which was laser cutting. There is a video of our track on the D-Tech Instagram page along with the other tracks. A link to the page is to the right. A picture of most of our team with the finished track is to the left.

Week 10

11/15/18

We have been working a lot on our marble run. We currently only have about 15 seconds, but we are no where near done. We have made our logo out of recycled foam and old paint samples. The marble goes through a tube on top of the leviathans back and jumps into a PVC pipe that has been bent. When it comes out of the PVC, it goes into a foam board track that then takes it to a clear tube that goes across the wooden structure. It then goes around the structure using more foam board track before going into another clear tube. It then goes into a thick cardboard track that goes around the inside of the structure. That's all we have now. We are planning on working over the weekend to finish it. A picture of what we have so far is to the right.

Week 9

11/8/18

Today we had an exhibition where everyone in Dynasty 3 showed off what they had been working on. All the houses were there and everyone had cool stuff. Dynasty 1 and 2 along with the school staff and faculty walked around and looked at our stiff. I was displaying my drawers, leviathan and key-chain. A video of the exhibition, made by Devin Franke, is linked to the right. We were also introduced to what our next house joust would be: a marble run! The goal is to get it as close to 60 seconds as possible only using recycled materials. We have started planning it out and are planning to meet at my house over the weekend o work on it.

Week 8

11/1/18

It turns out the safe doesn't work. When you try to open it, the door catches on the bottom of it, causing it to get jammed. The solution to this problem would completely change the design and would be too complicated to make, especially on such a small thing. So, I have decided to drop the project. Over the break, I didn't work on my music box but instead worked on a set of drawers for my mom. They are shaped like a honeycomb and have three slots. They are pictured to the left. I was able to successfully print them this week and earn my CAD mastery. I am working on posting them so I can get my 3D printing mastery on them as well. I am also working on a set of drawers for myself that are square shaped. A picture of what I have so far in CAD is on the right.

Week Seven

10/18/18

After testing the gears many times and making many adjustments, I have officially finished my safe and I am printing it now. It should be done after school today, meaning that I can assemble it tonight. I am working on a slide presentation to upload to Thingiverse in order to get mastery. A picture of the finished product on CAD in on the right. The darker lines are the outside, while the lighter ones show whats inside of it. It has a rack and pinion which allows the door to open and close when the knob on the outside is turned. I am also working on my music box and am almost done with making the notes. Fall break is next week and I am planning on finishing it then in my free time.

Week Six

10/11/18

I finished my safe design and have started working on my next project. I had to test print the door of the safe a few times to make sure it worked, but I think I finally have the correct dimensions and spacing for the teeth. I am going to print it overnight and pick it up on Friday. My next project is a music box. I have no idea how it's going to turn out, but I thought it would be fun to try. I am making an 8 note tune with 6 different pitches. The different pitch wheels are shown below.

Week Five

10/4/18

This week I was able to get my journeyman in 3D printing. I reprinted my leviathan design with the added chamfer and also made it twice as big. The first time I tried to print it, the printer didn't print the supports. I had the box checked, but it somehow didn't register. The wave part was already done, so I ended up wasting a lot of filament. Because of this, I had to print it overnight, since it was going to take 4 hours and I was starting it at 1:30 pm. Before I left, I made sure that the supports were printing, and thankfully, they were. When I came back in the morning, the print looked perfect. I don't currently have a picture because I don't have the print with me, but I will upload one as soon as possible. I also started my mastery project. I'm making a mini safe that has a working door. It involves gears, which took me forever to make. But I was able to get them working in the assembly. A picture of them in Onshape is to the right.

Week Four

9/27/18

This week I 3D printed two things and got my novice level in 3D printing. The first thing I printed was a key chain for myself (left). It worked pretty well, but I forget to print it with supports, causing the bottom of the hook to be a bit weird. I'm still really happy with how it turned out. The second thing that I printed was the leviathan symbol that I was working on last week (bottom). I was able to finish it Thursday night and print it on Friday. However, it didn't really work. It looked really good on the print bed, but I didn't put a chamfer on the bottom and I made it too small, so it took a while to get it off. When it finally came off, it was warped and cracked. I am going to print it again next week at twice the original size along with a newly added chamfer at the bottom.

Week Three

9/20/18

I have completed the Onshape Fundamentals course and received my certificate. I am now a journeyman in CAD. I also passed the 3D printing safety test and am now qualified to use a 3D printer. The coolest thing that happened this week, however, was the House Joust. We had to create a stand for a tennis ball using 100 straws and 5 feet of tape in 50 minutes. Whichever house had the tallest stand that could support the ball for 10 seconds won. We were able to win, but only by 10 mm. The stand in total was 1010 mm and is pictured to the left. As a result of winning, we got to pick which station we wanted first, so we chose 3D printing. I also started my own design in Onshape. I'm making our house logo and hope to 3D print it soon. My current progress is pictured on the right.

Week Two

9/13/18

I am still working on the Onshape course. I just started part 5 and I'm really excited to see how the assembly function works. It has been really cool so far to see how everything in Onshape works, like sketches, revolves, lofts, fillets, etc. Our house has been getting along really well. We all help each other out with Onshape, since some of the exercises are difficult and a little confusing. We created our house website, which is linked on my portfolio's D-Tech home page as well as to the left. It includes a description of our house and our goals, the crew member's names and portfolio links, a page describing the different skills we are going to learn, a project gallery and contact information.

Week One

9/6/18

We have been working on completing the Onshape fundamentals course for a week. I am currently at the very end of section 3. I had some difficulty coffee cup involving the handle. I wasn't able to attach the handle sketch to the cup sketch due to an unnecessary constraint. Once deleted, the sketch attached perfectly. Other than that, Onshape has been fairly easy for me. I have some previous CAD experience, so that probably gives me an advantage. We have also created our houses along with all the details that go into the house. Our house is named Leviathan, and includes Sara (the lord), Chloe, Hailey, Sofia, Megan, Shakti, Brandon, Naomi and Drew. I designed the logo after the whole house pitched ideas. The logo is pictured to the right. We also established our moto, which is "With Meraki, we sail the seas", along with our ranking system. We named our positions after pirate rankings. Sara is the Captain, Chloe is the Quarter Master, Brandon is the Sail Master, Megan is the Gunner, and everyone else is the crew.
