Life of Pi

The Resiliency of Pi Patel

Pi's resiliency comes from many different things, however, I chose to depict four of what I feel are the most important ones; empathy, communication, independence, and purpose.

Pi's empathy, communication, and independence is what allows him to care for Richard Parker. Because of this, he is able to keep Richard Parker alive, providing him with a sence of purpose. Pi's independence allows him to not only keep himself alive, but also to figure out how to tame and feed a wild tiger by himself. His communication skills help with this, as him being able to communicate with Richard Parker is key to his survival. However, it is his empathy that makes him want to take care of Richard Parker. It would have been easier to let Richard Parker die, however, Pi cares about him, so he kept him alive.

Pi has stated that without Richard Parker, he would not be alive, so through all these skills and keeping Richard Parker alive, he is able to keep himself alive. This provides him with a sence of purpose. He wants to find land not only for himself, but for Richard Parker. This purpose is incredibly key to his resilience because without it, he would have given up on both himself and Richard Parker.
