That Student! The one that would rather wear their ear buds, and look at their phone than engage in the lesson. The one that puts their head down before you even begin to start the lesson. The one that you know is brilliant, but never wants to do any work. The one that does everything possible to be seen and heard.
We have all had that student who challenged us all year! Instead of being thankful for the end of the school year, well maybe a little thankful it's over... flip your mindset and ask," what did this student teach ME?" How can I build more curiosity into my lessons?... How can I make sure students are ready to learn the new lesson, and not feeling overwhelmed? Are my tasks interesting, and meaningful? Would I want to be a student in my class? Are there opportunities for students to express themselves that are related to what they are learning? Is my feedback focused on growing learning, or an evaluation of knowledge?
This summer, or maybe in August while you are on the beach reading your favorite book, cleaning out your house, or just feeling a bit reflective, think about "That Student", and what they may have taught YOU! What will you do next?
