Welcome
Thank you for serving in the critical role of a substitute teacher. Every day, substitutes contribute to the safe and effective operation of our schools, and your service will enable continuity of instruction to support student success. We know that planning to step into an unfamiliar classroom might leave you with questions, and this site is designed to help you prepare. Additionally, please know that the school staff want you to be successful and will provide plans and support so that you have a rewarding day in the classroom!
QUICK TIPS FOR SUCCESS
Below are general quick tips for success to consider before, during, and after subbing. Specific building information like schedules, in-house contact numbers, and information related to discipline and specific health mitigation strategies will be given to you at the school level.
Wear business-casual or professional attire. Wear comfortable dress shoes/flats (avoid sandals, or open-toed shoes).
Arrive early enough to check-in at the front office, find the classroom, and review the schedule, protocols, and lesson plans.
Introduce yourself to the neighboring teachers and ask for their classroom phone number.
Greet students at the door with a warm welcome. A smile (even from behind a mask) and a hello can go a long way to establishing rapport.
Introduce yourself to students at the start of class.
Follow the lesson plan provided by the teacher.
Encourage and praise students often.
Offer individual redirection as necessary.
Leave notes for the teacher on what was accomplished throughout the day.
Organize lesson plan materials and any student work from the day and leave it on the teacher's desk in the classroom or department office.
Stop by the main office to return any materials provided at the start of the day.
Be sure to sign out of the building.
