Want to spend time with your youngster, build her reading skills, and help her learn to love books? You can do all three when you read aloud to her. Here are some suggestions.

Read regularly: Try to read to your child every day. You might aim for 10-15 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end to the day.

Take turns choosing books: Your youngster may want to hear old favorites again and again. Use your turn for new titles and variety (nonfiction, poetry or biographies).

Be playful: You can use different voices for different characters ( a high, squeaky voice for a chicken or a deep booming voice for a horse.) Substitute your youngster's name for the main character's name or use family members' names for other characters.

KINDERGARTEN:

Basic Phonetic Principles

  • Identify and name the capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet

  • Match consonant, short vowel, and initial consonant digraph sounds to appropriate letters

Develop Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

  • Identify and discriminate between spoken sentences, words, and syllables

  • Identify words according to shared beginning and/or ending sounds

FIRST GRADE:

Basic Phonetic Principles

  • Use initial and final consonants to decode and spell one-syllable words

  • Use consonant digraphs to decode and spell one-syllable words

  • Use short vowel sounds to decode and spell one-syllable words

  • Blend initial, medial, and final sounds to recognize and read words

  • Read and spell simple two-syllable compound words

Develop Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

  • Create rhyming words

  • Count phonemes(sounds) in one-syllable words

  • Blend sounds to make one-syllable words

  • Segment one-syllable words into individual phonemes

  • Blend and segment multi-syllabic words at the syllable level

SECOND GRADE:

  • Make, revise, and confirm predictions

  • Ask and answer questions using the text for support

  • Describe characters, setting, and important plot events using details from the text

  • Identify the conflict and resolution

  • Summarize stories and events with beginning, middle, and end in correct sequence

  • Draw conclusions based on the text

  • Preview and use text features

  • Identify the main idea and supporting details

Basic Phonetic Principles

  • Use knowledge of consonants, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs to decode and spell words

  • Use knowledge of short, long, and r-controlled vowel patterns to decode and spell words

  • Decode regular multi-syllabic words

  • Apply decoding strategies to confirm or correct while reading

Develop Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

  • Count phonemes within one-syllable words

  • Blend sounds to make one-syllable words

  • Segment one-syllable words into phonemes

  • Add or delete phonemes to make words

  • Blend and segment multi-syllabic words at the syllable level

THIRD GRADE:

  • Ask and answer questions before, during and after reading

  • Identify the narrator of the story

  • Identity conflict and resolution

FOURTH GRADE:

  • Identify the narrator

  • Ask and answer questions about what is read before, during, and after reading

  • Identity conflict and resolution

  • Use text features to predict and categorize

  • Identify main idea

FIFTH GRADE:

  • Differentiate between first and third person point of view

  • Ask and answer questions about what is read and to clarify various points of view

  • Identity conflict and resolution

  • Describe the impact of setting

  • Use text features, to predict and categorize information

  • Identify main idea

  • Ask and answer questions about what is read
