Parent Surf Report - Ocean Lakes Elementary School

From the Principal's Desk

Parents,

What a great year we’ve had! Thank you so very much for all of your support and encouragement this year. I cannot wait to see the end of the year progress of our students. I am confident they all made significant gains.

We just celebrated Volunteer in Education month. Volunteers logged in enough hours this year to equal 2 additional staff members. That is an amazing amount of support. Volunteers put together Wednesday folders every Tuesday, assisted with clubs, assisted in classrooms, planned evening activities, and too many others to list. We thank you for giving of your time to make Ocean Lakes a special place for kids to learn.

Over the summer we will not be having the Parks and Recreation program because the gym floor will be refurbished. We are getting a rubberized floor that will provide a softer surface. This new floor should minimize student injuries.

If you have been at Ocean Lakes recently you may have noticed the beautiful court yard and front flower beds. Nick Bingham beautified our school grounds and court yard with the assistance of members of his Boy Scout Troop and Navy volunteers. Many of the Boy Scouts are former students. A Girl Scout troop even assisted. We want to also thank his family, Nate and Addie.

I'd like to take a moment to thank Family First Realty for donating red oak saplings to our kindergarten through third grade students. They presented these saplings during an Arbor Day assembly. We hope your trees grow strong and tall!

Please do not forget to read over the summer. Mrs. Reed will send home a Summer Reading packet. We have planned a summer reading celebration for September. Details will be included in the Back to School letter.

Have a great month.

Dr. Reese

Student Absences and Tardies

Student absences and late arrivals should be reported daily. Please call 648-3200 and use Option 3 to report absences or late arrivals. Please leave the following information: student name, teacher name, and state whether the student will be absent or tardy, and reason for absence or late arrival. Any student arriving after 8:10 must be signed in by an adult at the security desk as they are considered tardy. Attendance and being on time for school are essential towards a child's education. Tardiness not only impedes education but also disrupts the teacher and education of other children within in the class.

Transportation Dismissal Changes

If you wish to change the way your child goes home after school please send in a note with your child with the following information: Student's first and last name, Teacher's name, name of responsible adult, contact information, and the change from the typical dismissal plan. If you must make a change after school has started for the day, please call the office at 648-3200 to report the change as soon as possible and no later than 2:20 p.m. Parents picking up their child each day must present a photo ID, sign them out at the security desk, and wait for the 2:40 p.m. dismissal time. They will typically be dismissed to the library where you can pick them up. Students must be picked up no later than 2:45 p.m. During the added minutes dismissal time is 2:55 so please pick up your child no later than 3:00. Extended hours end on Friday, May 4, 2018.

Report Cards

Quarter4 Progress Reports will be issued on Wednesday, May 11, 2018. Progress reports will only be issued to students performing below expected proficiency levels. The electronic version of the progress report will be sent electronically to the parents unless they do not have an email address in Synergy. Paper copies will be provided to parents without an email address.

Quarter 4 Report Cards will be mailed to your student's home on June 23rd.

It charts the course for teaching and learning across the division with the focus on ensuring that every student is challenged and supported to reach his or her full potential. The five year strategic framework includes four goals - high academic expectations, multiple pathways, social-emotional development, and culture of growth and excellence - and multiple strategies to guide this work. Destination Graduation Website

Lost & Found

Virginia Beach City Public Schools(VBCPS) created a new web resource for families referred to as Destination Graduation to help families navigate the journey for pre-kindergarten through high school to make the most of the opportunities available through VBCPS. The site may be accessed at the following link: http://www.vbschools.com/compass/destinationgraduation .

Parents and students, please check the lost and found box for missing items. The blue box is located next to the gymnasium bathrooms. Valuables such as cash, jewelry, electronics, glasses, etc. will be held in the office. All items in the lost and found box will be donated to charity in the coming weeks.

School Menus

Starting last month, breakfast and lunch menus were linked to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools page on SchoolCafé, where parents can navigate the menus for nutritional information and filter by allergens.

Clinic Notes

Medication Pickup

Please pick up your student's medication (including cough drops) no later than Friday, June 15th at 12:10. The nurse is required to dispose of all medications not picked up by this time. If an adult other than a custodial parent is going to pick up the medication please notify the nurse ahead of time.

Attention 5th Grade Parents!

A Tdap booster is required for students entering 6th grade. Please turn in copies of your child's shot record to the school nurse as they obtain this booster.

Sun Protection Done Right

Get a hat. Grab a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face, head, ears, and neck. If you are wearing a baseball cap, be sure to put sunscreen on your ears and the back of your neck.

Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses aren’t just for looks! Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun’s rays, and keep your eyes healthy and your vision sharp. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of the sun’s rays as possible. This information can often be found directly on the sunglasses.

Apply sunscreen. Put sunscreen on any exposed skin about 15 minutes before going outside to make sure you are totally protected. Don’t forget that sunscreen wears off. You’ll need to reapply it every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or drying off with a towel. To be sure the sunscreen will give you the protection you need, check the label to make sure it has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 and is labeled as broad spectrum.

Cover up. Your clothes can provide great protection from the sun. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and long skirts offer the best protection. If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, at least try to wear a t-shirt or a beach cover-up. Darker colored clothing is usually more protective than lighter colors, and a wet shirt is less protective than a dry one. Keep in mind that a typical t-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use other types of protection as well.

Seek shade. You can also help protect your skin by seeking shade. The sun’s rays are strongest during the middle of the day, from about 10 am to 4 pm. This is a good time for indoor activities. But if you are going to be outside during midday, try to stay in the shade as much as possible—under a tree, an umbrella, or any covered area out of the sun.

For greatest protection, use more than one way to protect yourself from the sun, use a combination of methods, such as shade, clothing, a hat with a wide brim, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Word of the Week

For the 2017-2018 school year, Ocean Lakes Elementary will continue with a Word of the Week (WOW word). Vocabulary is important to all of our students as they read and write every day. Each week, on the morning announcements we will highlight a vocabulary word. Students will also work on the WOW word in class. The focus will be on the part of speech, definition, writing the word in a sentence, and learning synonyms and antonyms. You can help at home! Ask your child about the Word of the Week!

  • April 30 - May 4 - HOSTILE
  • May 7 - 11 - BOYCOTT

Summer Dress Code

As warm weather has arrived, we want to review the student dress code. Students are expected to wear clothing appropriate to the school setting which does not disrupt the instructional process. Specific dress code standards include:

• Appropriate shoes, either closed-toe, hard-soled or tennis shoes, no flip-fops or sandals.

• Shorts of an appropriate length (finger-tip length or longer).

• Clothing which overexposes the body is unacceptable (for example-tank tops, mid-drift tops, spaghetti strap tops,

racer back tops or halter tops).

• Clothing which advertises, glorifies, or symbolizes any illegal substance; and lewd or suggestive attire is inappropriate.

• Parents of inappropriately dressed students will be contacted to bring in a change of clothing.

Volunteers Needed

PTA will need volunteers for Field Day scheduled for June 12, 2018. You can email the PTA for more information at olespta@gmail.com. The PTA can always use volunteers every Tuesday morning for stuffing weekly folders also. When volunteering please make sure you log your hours at vbschools.com/getconnected. Just click the log hours button. VB schools calculates the amount of your invaluable service. Those calculations help schools apply for federal grants which ultimately benefit our students.

A Huge Thank You!

A huge thank you to Allison Quaresma for organizing our annual Tricky Tray event. She did a wonderful job. We had a tremendous turnout and she helped raise a lot of money for our school. Your hard work did not go unnoticed. Thank you also to the rest of our PTA and volunteers who helped out with this event. It takes a team and Allison couldn't have done it without you.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for the event as well. Without their generous donations the event would not have been possible.

Congratulations to Ms. Nichole Carter
