Lancer Families,
We want to begin our last weekly message by simply saying "Thank you!" We have made it through this challenging year and because of your support, this year was truly a success. The Landstown Middle School learning community should be proud of what we accomplished this school year during the pandemic. Together, we faced every challenge and found success through collaboration with our entire community. Our hats off to everyone for the job each of you did and always know how much we love and appreciate you! We hope everyone has a fantastic summer vacation!
As we wrap up this school year and begin summer vacation, we want to share with you some outstanding information. We awarded 171 students the Presidential Award, which is based on outstanding academic achievement. We had 564 students earn Academic Excellence Awards. During the 1st semester, we had 807 students earn either principals list or honor roll. Throughout the year, we recognized 362 students through our Student of the Month program. On Monday, June 14, we had over 200 families participate in our 8th grade "Drive-By" celebration. Our entire staff is so proud of the work we have done together, and these points of celebration are a reflection of our collaboration, love, and support throughout the pandemic.
Just a few updates as we move into summer vacation. First, as previously mentioned, the school year officially ends today, and all grades are finalized. Parents will have access to final grades in ParentVue. Report cards will be mailed home on Tuesday, June 22. Counselors will continue to monitor all students with failing grades, and any student failing a year course will be notified by mail. School Counselors will also be making phone calls to the families of any student that failed a year course to discuss summer school options. Second, all students remaining in VBCPS will keep their chromebooks for next school year. If you are moving out of VBCPS, you will need to turn your chromebook in during summer hours. Finally, due to the pandemic, there is a back order for our yearbooks. Unfortunately, yearbooks will not arrive until late-July. Once yearbooks arrive, we will notify all families that ordered them.
We also want to share with our families that we have created a website titled "Rising 6th Grade FAQ," to assist all our new Lancers. The link to access this new informational webpage is located in today's edition of "The Shield." We will send a separate Alert Now to our new Lancer Families but we want our learning community to be aware of this new informational webpage and share with anyone who will be new to Landstown Middle next year. In addition, we have scheduled our Lancer Launch for our rising 6th graders on Wednesday, August 25. We will send postcards to all our rising 6th grade families but we wanted to share this information as well.
We hope you enjoy our final 2020-2021 edition of "The Shield." Please continue to monitor all VBCPS family messages for updates, and stay safe and healthy. Take care, and go, Lancers!

All students who are returning to VBCPS next year will keep their chromebooks over the summer.
If you are leaving VB Schools, please come by the school to return your child's device, if you haven't already done so.
The Yearbook Staff would like to thank all parents for their support this year. Because of the unusual circumstances of the this historic pandemic year, our excepted delivery for yearbooks will be in late July. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this. We will send further information as we get closer to the delivery date. Have a terrific summer.
We are seeking final input on our new vision statement for Landstown Middle School.
As a collaborative team, through our School Planning Council, Instructional Leadership Team, and our Student Advisory Group, we have created two drafts of our vision statement and would like you to contribute by reading both and selecting one that you feel would best fit the Landstown Lancer family.
For reference, our teams sought alignment with VBCPS Strategic Plan & Goals: Compass to 2025 and worked under the direction that a mission statement answers the question, “Why do we exist?” and a vision statement answers the question, “What does it look like/feel like as we fulfill our mission?” We have included our mission statement here:
Landstown Middle Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide a quality education through shared responsibility in a safe supportive environment for all students to meet the challenges of a global society.
Please click this link, read both vision statements, and select one that we will embed in our Plan for Continuous Improvement. We will continue our work with our community to live it in our daily decisions, actions, and words.
Thank you for your participation.
This site provides fantastic information about what to expect as a sixth grader. Please visit this site and watch videos our staff created to give you a glimpse of life as a 6th grade Lancer. We can't wait for you to join us!

Lancer Families,
Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success!" As we approach our last week of this challenging school year, it is important that our entire learning community reflect on the work WE did this year, how WE worked together throughout this year, and that WE celebrate our success because WE have so much to celebrate. We are so proud of our students, families, and staff members for their dedication and commitment to the success of our students and families. Landstown Middle School is truly a remarkable school because of the commitment from our students, families, and staff and we THANK YOU for all your support throughout this school year.
We are so excited to celebrate our 8th-grade students on Monday, June 14. We hope our 8th-grade families are able to participate in the "Drive-By & Pictures" celebration. Parents may bring their students anytime between the hours of 1:00-3:00 PM, or 5:00-7:00 PM. Students who participate will receive a celebratory certificate, may take a photo, and will receive a small gift from the PTSA. Although we cannot gather as a large group, we want to provide our 8th-grade students and families an opportunity to celebrate with us, so we hope you are able to visit Monday during the slotted times.
There are just a few reminders as we approach our last week of school. The school year officially ends on June 18, and all grades are finalized by teachers on that same day. You will find all this information in today's edition of "The Shield."
Finally, we are pleased to launch our new "Rising 6th Grade FAQ" webpage for our rising 6th-grade students and families. This is a new initiative implemented to assist our new Lancer families. The webpage contains a virtual tour of our school, in addition to staff videos explaining important information such as AVID, Classes, Communication, Enrollment, Gifted Program, Parent Portal, Spanish Immersion, Special Education, Student Activities, and other additional pieces of information. We are proud of this new initiative and we hope our new Lancer Families find it beneficial as they transition from elementary school to the Lancer Family.

Landstown Middle School students Micah Dickerson (8th), Bahaar Grewal (6th), Elijah Shimp (6th), and mentor Ms. Nader spent the last three months designing a UV Sanitization Mask Locker for the Stem Trifecta Competition 2021. The goal of the team was to create a product that helps the global community! The first time competitors navigated their way through blueprint drawings of product designs, researching essential materials, effective business strategies, and scriptwriting. We are proud to announce that our team placed 2nd within the district for the Maker Expo portion of the competition!

We hope our 8th-grade families are able to participate on June 14.

From her nomination: The most important tool a teacher can have to be effective is good rapport with students. Kate Gerbus has the best rapport with her students and I love watching her interact with them. She can get a quiet kid to open up and a rambunctious kid to settle down. She bonds with them over love of movies, especially Hamilton and Disney movies. She has high expectations for all of her students, even the ones who are not currently in her class. Her students know these expectations and strive to meet them to make her proud. She mainatins a lasting relationship with her students that is visible during class changes and walking to lunches as she waves to them, call to them by name, and asks things about how their lives are going.
Our PTSA is incredible! They have supported our learning community during this challenging year and we love everything they do for our students, staff and community. We are proud to share our PTSA recently received the 2020-21 Membership Award! Congratulations!
“Mrs. Scott is an AMAZING teacher that exemplifies the "One Team, One Heartbeat" motto at LMS. She has done a stellar job teaching in the virtual setting and made learning fun for all of her students. She truly understands that relationships matter and that was evident through the cards that she continuously sent to her students in the mail. As a teacher myself, I know how challenging virtual learning can be at times. Mrs. Scott went above and beyond to ensure all her students were successful and did it enthusiastically with a smile on her face each and every day. We're blessed to have had such a caring teacher in the 1st semester. Thank you for all that you did for my son!”
“I am a new teacher at Landstown Middle School. Abby has gone above and beyond to help me this year...answering ALL of my questions, responding to many texts and phone calls, and becoming my "go to" person. She simply does this with a smile and a kind heart. She certainly doesn't deserve to have the extra burden, but has done this willingly and full of grace! I adore her and appreciate her so much! If she does this for a colleague, imagine what she does for her students! I would love for her to be recognized for all of these reasons!”

Lancer Families,
It is hard to believe that we have five weeks remaining for the 2020-2021 school year. Although we are almost finished with this year, there is still much work to do over the next few weeks. As mentioned last week, the current marking period ended this week, and the final marking period of this school year began on Thursday, May 13. Report cards are now available in ParentVue. This is a critical time to review grades with your student, so we ask our parents to continuously monitor your student's current grades and all missing assignments as we get closer to the end of this school year. If you would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact your student's school counselor, and he or she can schedule an appointment.
Just a few reminders for this week. The VBCPS Pre-enrollment survey closes on May 16. If you have not completed the survey, please follow the instructions in "The Shield," and complete the survey, which provides families an opportunity to choose in-person or virtual instruction for the 2021-22 school year. Families who do not respond to the survey will receive face-to-face instruction for the 2021-22 school year. Also, it is important for all students and families to be aware that SOL test administration begins on Monday, May 24. Please refer to the "Spring SOL Test Information and Tutoring" section in "The Shield" for more information.
Finally, to celebrate our 8th-grade students, the PTSA has provided opportunities for families to purchase yard signs and t-shirts to commemorate this school year. If you are interested in purchasing a yard sign, t-shirt, or both for your 8th-grade student, please follow the links located in the "8th Grade Graduation Swag," section of today's parent newsletter. You may complete an online order form, or fill out an order form and drop it off in the main office. All orders are due by May 24.
We hope you enjoy this week's edition. Please continue to monitor all VBCPS family messages for updates, and stay safe and healthy. Take care, and Go, Lancers!

Lancer Families,
We hope everyone had a fantastic week. This week, was simply awesome as we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week. We want to thank our PTSA, NJHS, SCA, our Student Activities Coordinator, Mrs. Clukey, and everyone involved with this week's celebration. We have included some pictures to view, to share with you how much our teachers appreciate everyone working together to celebrate our staff. Henry Brooks Adams stated, "Teachers affect eternity; no one can tell where their influence stops." We truly believe that our teachers have a profound impact on our students and learning community everyday, and beyond. That specific quote reflects the impact our teachers have on the Lancer community and we are so proud of them. We are fortunate to have a staff that serves our learning community with love, dedication, and commitment to the success of ALL our students. During this pandemic, it was clear they did an outstanding job working with our students and families while navigating unchartered waters. We love our teachers and we thank all those involved for making this week truly special.
We also want to wish all our Lancer moms a "Happy Mother's Day!" We hope all our Lancer moms have a restful and relaxing weekend. We appreciate you!
There is some very important information we need to point out in this weeks edition of "The Shield." First, the current marking period ends and the final marking period of this school year begins on Thursday, May 13. Report cards will be released on Tuesday, May 18, and you may access your student's report cards in ParentVue. This is a critical time to review grades with your student, so we ask our parents to continuously monitor your student's current grades and all missing assignments as we get closer to the end of this school year. Second, all families received a VBCPS Pre-enrollment survey regarding options for next school year. Families are asked to indicate if you intend to choose in person or virtual instruction for your student for the 2021-22 school year. The survey is open until May 16 and families who do not respond to the survey will receive face-to-face instruction for the 2021-22 school year. Instructions on how to complete the survey are listed in "The Shield." Finally, SOL test administration begins the week of May 24. We have included important information related to SOL testing so please take time to review this information in "The Shield."
We hope you enjoy this week's edition. Please continue to monitor all VBCPS family messages for updates, and
stay safe and healthy. Take care, and Go, Lancers!

“Throughout the entire first half of the year, Mr. Landaeta always had enthusiasm and was motivating towards his students & classes. This year has been incredibly challenging for all teachers, but somehow he managed to seem excited daily to be teaching (in non ideal circumstances): his voice sounded like a smile. Anytime I’d hear parts of his lessons, he was actively participating with students and providing positive feedback to each and every one of them. His level of patience was astounding, because some of the students didn’t seem to have the best impulse control. He is an amazing teacher & person; always showing a vested interest in how his “kids” are doing in school and at home. I think he should be Teacher of the Year, but until then, please recognize this amazing & talented man for Teacher of the Month! Thank you!
“I hope it’s ok to nominate Teacher Assistants. Laura would check in on my class even when she had the day off. She loves her special education students and cares so much for them. She even offered to zoom in on her day off. She also had muffin MONDAY last year to boost morale. She is a true Lancer.”

Lancer Families,
We want to thank everyone for a successful week as all our Option One students returned to four consecutive days of face-to-face instruction. This was the first time since Friday, March 13, 2020, that we had students from every grade level in our building at once. Our staff loved watching all Option One students enter the building ready for instruction and engagement. This is another example of how working together impacts our learning environment. As we have emphasized before, we love our learning community, and this week is another example of how we truly are OneTeamOneHeartbeat. Thank you for all your support this week.
This year has been extremely challenging for everyone due to navigating uncharted waters during the pandemic. As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7) next week, we ask our learning community to join us in celebrating our teachers for the job they do each and everyday! Please e-mail and thank your students' teachers and encourage your student to thank them as well. As both a parent and an administrator, I assure you our teachers have and continue to do remarkable work to ensure ALL our students are successful and have the necessary resources. We have received so many complimentary messages from families about our teachers' dedication and commitment to their students, and we ask that you continue to recognize our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week for the job they do for our students. We truly love our teachers and appreciate them for what they do, so lets show our teachers this week how much we appreciate them.
Finally, we ask our parents to continuously monitor your students current grades and missing assignments. As of today, there are seven weeks remaining in the 2020-2021 school year. The 7th marking period will close on Wednesday, May 12, so please utilize ParentVue to access your students grades. As previously mentioned, if you would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact your student's school counselor, and he or she can schedule an appointment.
We hope you enjoy this week's edition of, "The Shield." Please continue to monitor all VBCPS family messages for updates, and
stay safe and healthy. Take care, and Go, Lancers!

Lancer Families,
We hope everyone had a fantastic week. Our staff is so excited to welcome back all our Option One students, for four days of instruction, beginning Tuesday, April 27. Last week, we shared with you an adjusted schedule that was implemented this week in preparation for the next phase of face-to-face learning. We appreciate the flexibility of our students, staff, and families, and we look forward to seeing all of our Option One students at LMS, Tuesday-Friday.
As we shift to four concurrent days of face-to-face instruction for all our Option One students, we ask all our families to be aware of our new schedule because this will impact our Option Two students due to our lunch schedule changes. The new schedule is still accessible in "The Shield," so please make sure you are well aware of the changes.
With the return of additional students, four days a week, we anticipate slight traffic congestion in the mornings and afternoons due to the increased number of parents who pick-up and drop off their students. We will continue to implement the same pick-up and drop off procedures, however, we ask that our families understand and anticipate additional traffic in the parking lot beginning Tuesday, April 27, especially at dismissal. To assist our families and provide more supervision for safety reasons during dismissal, we will have additional staff in the parking lot to assist students with crossing parking lanes. In addition, we are asking that specific grade level parents consider utilizing our designated grade level lanes to increase traffic flow in and out of our parking lot. For visual purposes, we have attached a map in "The Shield," which provides an aerial view with directional arrows of our pick-up lanes.
As a reminder from last week, Marking Period 6 ended on April 14th, and report cards were made available on April 21 through Parent Vue. Marking Period 7 began on April 15th and it is critical that our families continue to monitor grades, homework assignments, and missing work. As previously mentioned, if you would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact your student's school counselor, and he or she can schedule an appointment.
We hope you enjoy this week's edition of, "The Shield." Please continue to monitor all VBCPS family messages for updates, and

Lancer Families,
We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Spring Break. It was awesome seeing our students return this week. Our staff is ready to continue this journey and we look forward to a fantastic Spring. As you may be aware, VBCPS announced Thursday evening a plan to return all Option 1 students in grades 7-12 to face-to-face instruction, four days a week, as of Tuesday, April 27. We are so excited to have all Option 1 grade levels in the building together, Tuesday-Friday. For more information regarding this recent VBCPS announcement, please refer to the VBCPS family update from Thursday, April 15, 2021.
With the recent announcement of all Option One students returning to the building on April 27, we will need to make some slight adjustments to our current schedule to accommodate the addition of another grade level, especially for our lunch schedule. To assist our preparations for April 27, we will begin our new schedule on Tuesday, April 20th. Doing so will allow us four days to practice our new schedule and establish our new routines prior to the return of all Option One students. The biggest change is when our lunch shifts will begin and end, which will impact our Option 2 students, so we are asking all our families to review the new schedule that is included in this week's edition.
As a reminder, Marking Period 6 ended on April 14th, and report cards will be available on April 21 through Parent Vue. Marking Period 7 just started so it is critical our families continue to monitor grades, homework assignments, and missing work. As previously mentioned, if you would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact your student's school counselor and he or she can schedule an appointment.
We hope you enjoy this week's edition of, "The Shield." Please continue to monitor all VBCPS family messages for updates, and

Congratulations to Ms. Anthony's first block Enlgish class for winning the Read to Succeed Achieve 3000 National Contest! We're so proud of each and every one of our students that participated! Way to go, Lancers!
Due to an abbreviated year for in-person and remote learning, and the sensitive nature of some of the topics covered in Family Life Education, Family Life Education lessons will not take place this year for students in grades six and seven. The topics addressed in these lessons will be covered the next year that your child has Family Life instruction.
If you wish to engage your child in conversation around the topics that would have been covered this year, please call the school, and we will provide you with a link to resources and suggested discussion questions for the Family Life Education topics.

Thank you,
The Department of Technology (DOT) has updated and revised the internet support request process for use by families of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) students. The current options for internet access can be reviewed at the DOT technology support website. In addition to the available internet access providers available in Virginia Beach, students may also use data plans on their smart phones, WIFI access inside and outside of school buildings, and for those families who qualify, the VBCPS Internet Assistance Program.
The Internet Assistance Program will provide qualifying families either a $10 subsidy paid directly to a family’s Cox Communications account or a hotspot if the family cannot receive internet services through Cox Communications. To qualify, families must be enrolled in an approved government assistance program (SNAP, TANF, NSLP, WIC, Head Start, LIHEAP, or Public Housing) or have a demonstrated need for internet access support. The vetting of internet support requests will no longer be completed at the school level but will now be completed by DOT. In addition to vetting all requests, DOT staff will also coordinate the distribution of the hotspots and management of the Cox subsidies.
If students or families have questions regarding the program, they can reference the information provided online, or call the Customer Support Center at (757) 263-1111. Questions or concerns regarding the Internet Assistance Program can be emailed to Michael Combs, at Michael.Combs@vbschools.com .

“Awesome and Compassionate! “
“I just wanted to THANK YOU so much for all that you did to help Ethan succeed this semester. Although virtual learning was a different learning environment for all of us, you did it seamlessly! Ethan learned a lot and was happy the entire time in your class. Just tonight at the dinner table we discussed his teachers/classes for this new semester. I asked him what his favorite class/teacher was from the 1st semester, without hesitation he said, "Mrs. Allen! She made English fun and easy to understand." He also found out today that our neighbor has you this semester. Ethan told him how much he'd enjoy your class. That says a lot when a 13 year old who doesn't converse much about school says that. He was so excited to receive your card in the mail and the 7-11 card. That was super thoughtful of you. It's teachers like you that are making a lasting impact on their students. Building relationships is so important, more so now than ever in education. You nailed that with Ethan! We appreciate you more than you'll ever know. Best wishes in your new semester!”
“She is successful with the challenges of virtual teaching through positive interactions with her students and helping colleagues succeed. Always a positive interaction”
“Works in cooperation with her department to plan and deliver high quality health and PE lessons weekly while always bringing the fun for her students. She was also instrumental in getting the Specialized grant and continues to work on this special project so it will be up and “riding” this spring.”

Overall, students are dressing appropriately; however, we are seeing an increase in a few of the following items that we would like to bring to your attention. Grade Level Administrators will reinforce with students reminders about the dress code, but additionally we need your support. Here are a few reminders.
Regardless of gender:
Fingertip length- All shorts, skirts, and rips in jeans may not be higher on a student's leg than fingertip length. At home, students can evaluate this length by placing their arms at their side. Students may where leggings/shorts underneath to ensure no skin above the fingertip length is exposed.
No tops, such as crop-tops, that expose the midriff or shirts that expose any part of the body or undergarments. Additionally, students should be able to raise their hand without exposing their midriff.
Again, this is not an all-inclusive list. These are the areas we have increasingly had to address with students. For general guidelines from VBCPS on student dress please view page 3 from the VBCPS Code of Student Conduct.

I nominate Mrs. Palm because during virtual school she has made it easy for me to learn. She is also a great teacher!!
6th Grade Science Teacher
I am writing to nominate Mrs. Palm for Teacher of the Month. During this trying time Mrs. Palm has gone above and beyond with her students! Even though classes are virtual she makes every effort to interact with her students and push them to achieve in all they do. She makes learning fun, whether in the classroom or online. Her love for her students really shines through, and her positive attitude is infectious. Not only is she amazing with her students, Mrs. Palm also keeps the parents informed on what the children are doing. My child absolutely adored her as a teacher and we are lucky enough to have not only one of our children in her class, but now another will have her as their teacher. Thank you Mrs. Palm for making Sixth Grade an easy transition for our children.
Mrs. Palm proves time and again how important her students and their education are to her by going above and beyond. She engages her students in fun lessons, activities and demonstrations--all done virtually! She keeps in contact with parents giving schedule and assessment updates. Mrs. Palm takes the time to praise each of her students and gives them the recognition they work hard for. She makes sure the students and their parents know how proud she is of their success and hard work. Mrs. Palm has created a love of science in my daughter, making this class and Mrs. Palm her favorite part of 6th grade thus far!
As we celebrate School Counseling Appreciation week, we want to thank our Awesome Team consisting of Mr. Todd Fritz, Ms. Elizabeth Bush, Mrs. Megan Foard, Mrs. Amy Neff, and Mr. Chris Schroepfer. We are so proud and grateful for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our students, families, staff, and our entire learning community. Our School Counseling Team Rocks
Just a friendly reminder that due to the current pandemic and CDC guidelines, outside items, gifts, food and/or holiday cards brought to school by students or parents for distribution to students are not allowed during the pandemic. This practice may increase exposure risk so students will not be permitted to share any outside items with other students or staff during this time. Thank you for your attention to this matter as we work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community.
In honor of Black History Month, students at Landstown Middle School will be participating in a number of enriching activities to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and recognize their central role in U.S. history. Each morning, students will view highlights of relevant African American history makers on the morning announcements and will have the opportunity to win prizes each Friday by answering trivia questions. We will also encourage students to write and submit their own trivia questions! Additionally, students will have access to a choice board in which they will find videos, activities such as virtual museum tours, and self-reflection activities which will provide students with the opportunity to reflect on their own culture and values, and how they impact students’ daily life.

Lancer Families,
As you are aware, today was the last day of Term 1. Monday, February 1,is an All Staff Day for teachers to finalize all Term 1 grades and prepare for Term 2, which officially begins on Tuesday, February 2. As a reminder, all student’s grades for Term 1 will be their final grade for this school year, which will be available in Parent Vue at the end of the day on Friday, February 5.
On Tuesday, your student will have two new core classes and a new elective class, so it is important for you to become familiar with how to access the new schedule in Parent Vue and Schoology. Today’s edition of “The Shield,” provides additional information related to Term 2. In addition, to assist our families with meeting their teachers prior to Tuesday, our teachers have created introductory videos you may access in this week’s edition of “The Shield.” After finding your child’s teachers for Term 2, please visit "Welcome to Landstown MS" site to watch an introduction video from each teacher. Please take time to watch the introductory videos prior to Tuesday so your student knows who their specific teachers are for Term 2. Also, be sure to have your student check their Schoology folders on Monday, February 1 so they are aware of how to log in to their new classes.
In addition to beginning a new term, per the VBCPS current plan, Option One 6th grade students are scheduled to return to school for face-to-face instruction on Tuesday, February 2. Please continue to monitor messages regarding school operations through VBCPS family messages. VBCPS provided further communication on Thursday, January 28, regarding the schedule for the return of Option 1 students to classrooms. It is important for our families to continue to monitor all VBCPS Family messages so that you are aware of the operational status of our schools. If you did not review that message, you may access the information in today’s edition of “The Shield.”
Finally, as mentioned last week, to assist our families for Term 2, LMS is scheduling a Term 2 Virtual Open House on Tuesday, February 16, beginning at 6:00 pm. It is important for our families to review that message so that you are aware of the operational status of our schools. If you did not review that message, you may access the information in today’s edition of “The Shield.”

A questionnaire was sent via school announcements in December and posted in the Shield's December 18th edition for the opportunity to sign your child up for SOL testing that is taking place now through January 29th.
There is no penalty for opting out of SOLs this year. Many parents have opted not to have their student test due to the challenging school year, as well as, due to current health metrics. We understand that you receive an overwhelming amount of information from VBCPS and from Landstown; however, In order to prepare and follow testing protocols, we can only test those students who completed the survey. Please do not send your student if this was not completed in December.

Lancer Families,
First, we want to start by wishing everyone a Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and relaxing Winter Break. It’s hard to believe it is 2021, but we know we are ALL ready to begin a new year with enthusiasm, and much optimism, as we work together navigating through this pandemic. As you are aware, Dr. Spence presented a proposal to the school board on Tuesday, January 5, regarding the return of Option 1 students to face-to-face instruction. The proposed schedule includes a recommendation for a return date of January 19, for Pre-K- 6th grade, and February 9-12, for grades 7-12. The next School Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12, and the School Board will determine next steps for school operations. If you are not aware of this proposal, please review the link below, under "Upcoming Dates" that provides information that was shared with staff and families from VBCPS on January 5, 2021.
Lastly, as we move into January, it is very important for families to continue to monitor your student’s grades, class assignments, and homework. This is critical due to the increased rigor and pacing of the 4 x 4 schedule. Please be aware that your student’s grades for Term 1(ending January 29) will be their final grade for the courses they are currently enrolled in for the 2020-2021 school year. When Term 2 begins on February 2, your student will take two new core classes and a new elective class.

"She is a light in the building who inspires me each day to be the best human I can be, even when others may not be at their best. She reminds us that we are responsible for us, and doing our part is important to all we encounter and especially to those who depend on us each day to bring it!”

Mrs. McGuire-“Her dedication and support of her McGuire Marvels is inspiring to witness and a call to action to any educator who encounters it. She creates a fun and engaging learning environment that encourages her Marvels to broaden their minds and experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Julie is a phenomenal educator that should be seen as an example for all who wish to succeed in this field.”
Mrs. Odle- “Jamie is one of the most patient teachers I know. When you walk into her room, it is apparent that her students not only respect her but truly appreciate her attention to detail, her kind manner, and her infectious smile. She is a dedicated teacher and is most deserving of being recognized as an outstanding teacher at Landstown Middle School.”
Mrs. Wade- “The quality I admire most, is Sara’s ability to make everyone feel important and valued. Sara always stops what she is doing to listen, to help, or give advice. In addition, Sara is the first one to volunteer if help is needed anywhere in the school from filling in as the of Students Activities Coordinator, scoring sporting events or mentoring new teachers. Sara’s commitment to her students and staff is truly remarkable.”
The Office of Family and Community Engagement is inviting interested parents to join family voice groups to gain critical feedback from some of our most important stakeholders!
Family voice groups are centered around equity and empowerment for families in the community. This group’s intention is to give identity and voice within a supportive environment.
We want to listen and learn from families to increase the Division’s awareness of needs within the community. If you are interested in attending, please complete the google form here or you may contact Family Engagement Representative, Juhanna Frias at 757-524-2675 or Juhanna.Frias@vbschools.com.
Use this form to nominate a teacher. Each month the PTSA is collecting nominations from staff, students, and parents, to select a teacher. Teachers are working hard to support Landstown's students, both academically and social and emotionally. Please let them know how much they are appreciated.
