This is One Voice Children's Choir covering "Good Job" by Alicia Keys: A Tribute to Covid-19 Heroes
The One Voice Children's Choir would like to say “Good Job” to essential workers, teachers, and parents during this world-wide pandemic. We’re thankful for these unsung heroes and all who are doing their best in these unprecedented times. We invite anyone who is struggling to hear us. You are not alone, you matter, and you are doing a Good Job.
We are honored that Landstown's Megan Scott was tagged by the Superintendent for making a significant contribution and positive impact on others.
Congratulations to Jermain M who earned first place for Special Artist in the PTSA Reflections Contest. He placed in the city-wide division and will now move on to be judged at the Virginia State level!
The SOL assessments measure your child’s achievement on the Virginia Standards of Learning. During the January testing window, all students who are currently enrolled in a course that has an associated SOL test will be given the opportunity to come into the school building to take the SOL assessment. Please refer to the MS Schedule and Protocol Attachment to review the testing calendar and health and safety measures that will be in place.
Click here for questionnaire link that was sent out on Wednesday, Dec. 16th requesting information about the participation of your student in the upcoming non-writing SOL test administration scheduled for January 6 through January 20. It is imperative that you answer the questions provided so that our school can plan appropriately. The questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete, and you have until Sunday, December 20th to respond to the questions.
Greetings from the GSWLA!
As many of you know, each school year the students and teachers of the Global Studies & World Languages Academy at Tallwood High School produce a program called “We Share One World”. We invite middle schoolers from across the city to join us on a Saturday for a celebration of language and culture, where participants select sessions to learn about the diverse cultures of the world through language, art, dance, cooking, and even engaging in competitive games from across the globe. Although we wish our 14th annual program could be the engaging and hands-on experience that we have produced for many years, we could not let 2020 pass without at least a virtual version of our most loved event!
So, we have produced this gift of engagement for your students to enjoy from the comfort and safety of their homes over the winter break. Created by GSWLA students, this is an interactive presentation. Embedded in the presentation are videos they have made to teach your students about their culture and those they are learning about at the GSWLA. The videos feature cooking, dancing, speaking, and more…and the content continues to grow! We hope you will share this link with your students and families so everyone can enjoy the “We Share One World” experience, despite the unique circumstances of 2020.
All students have watched the video in their Block 1 class, but here is a chance for you, the parents, to also watch a 9 minute video about VBCPS Academies and the Application process. Here is a link to the application and application process. Good Luck Lancers!
Landstown Middle School is actively seeking interested staff, parents, and community members to serve on the School Planning Council. Council Members include administrators, teachers, and parents/community members. The role of the School Planning Council is to support and promote Landstown’s Plan for Continuous Improvement. This offers participants the opportunity to work together to meet Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ goals and objectives to prepare students to succeed as learners, workers, and citizens.
This year we are focused on two priorities:
1. Re-imagine and finalize new vision and mission statements.
2. Develop a plan that answers two questions regarding our newly created vision and mission:
A. What does it look like and sound like to “live” these statements?
B. What are the most effective ways to communicate these to all stakeholders and to make this vision and mission visible?
No prior experience is needed, and our collaborative sessions will be facilitated by our Assistant Principal, Jennifer Baxter. Please consider bringing insight to our School Planning Council and join us for the following sessions:
2nd Wednesday, January through June, from 5:00-6:00pm.

This month the PTSA would like to recognize two teachers of the month:
“Ms. Thompson works tirelessly as department chair for special education, a co-teacher, case manager, self-contained teacher, and Literacy/Numeracy block teacher. She is meticulous in everything she does including writing IEPs, organizing and collecting IEP data for student goals, creating lesson plans to help her 6th grade English team, providing specially designed instruction for special education students, and numerous other tasks. When our school was without an AP for a short time, Ms. Thompson stepped up and took on many extra responsibilities including ending her summer early. She started working at the beginning of August and continues to do her absolute best each day. Ms. Thompson continues to search for ways to improve her teaching practices and instruction and shares these ideas with her colleagues. She is always willing to help anyone in need and is a true team player. Ms. Thompson is dedicated to our school, the staff, and most importantly her students as she constantly strives to ensure each student receives the best learning experience possible. She is truly deserving of this recognition.”
“Mrs. Rajyns is an amazing teacher! She is the 6th grade pre algebra teacher. This class is extremely fast paced. Students are learning 6th, 7th and 8th grade math in 1 year. This year especially being more difficult, because they are learning all of this material in one semester! She has worked tirelessly, teaching several concepts a day in order to keep up with this fast paced curriculum. She is always available and is prompt to answer students' questions. She has offered extra credit and additional assignments for students to complete to maintain their preferred grade. Any time I have had a question or voiced my concerns with the fast paced curriculum during this time, she has responded quickly and addressed my concerns. She has even taken the time to personally call me, when I have had questions. She truly cares about her students and keeps parents involved. My daughter really enjoys having her as a teacher! Thank you Mrs. Rajyns!”
Addtionally, the PTSA would like to recognize all nominations received:
Mr. Hicks- 6th grade Social Studies
Jamie Fredrick - 7th grade Science

Lancer Families,
We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday. We are so thankful for our Lancer families and the continuous support from our learning community. As you are aware, on November 16, due to the health metrics for the Eastern Region of Virginia, VBCPS shifted instruction to virtual for all students. You all have done a phenomenal job with this transition and by working together, we will continue to provide the best support and instruction for our students and families during these challenging times. On Tuesday, December 1, we were thrilled to welcome back designated students with disabilities to LMS. Seeing some of our students brought so much joy and happiness to our staff. Simply put, we miss our students every day! If your family needs assistance or you have any questions, please contact the school during office hours between 9 AM- 5 PM, Monday-Friday at 757-648-4750.
In the meantime, please continue to monitor weekly messages from VBCPS. As explained last week in a message from VBCPS, if buildings have been closed due to metrics being in the red zone, VBCPS will monitor and wait for the trend for the Eastern Virginia Region to turn back to yellow/yellow. At that time, VBCPS will confirm the trend with local public health officials and plan to return all Option 1 students to class after seven days. However, if within those seven days the health metrics trend to any combination that includes red, we will maintain all virtual instruction and start the seven-day countdown again from whenever those metrics return to yellow/yellow. VBCPS will continue to provide updates and notifications regarding the operating status of schools so please continue to monitor weekly updates from VBCPS.
Lastly, we are proud to announce that 761 students earned either Principal’s List (PL) or Honor Roll (HR) for the 2nd Marking Period. Sixth grade had 46 (PL) and 236 (HR). Seventh grade had 69 (PL) and 179 (HR). Eighth grade had 60 (PL) and 171 (HR). This accomplishment is the result of teachers, parents, and students working together for a common purpose. We truly are #OneTeamOneHeartbeat. We hope you enjoy this week’s edition of “The Shield.” Stay safe and healthy! Take care and Go, Lancers!

Hello Parents, Students, and Staff!! My name is Shadiyah Harris and I am excited to share that I am your Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC). I have had the great pleasure of helping children and families within the school for over 15 years; more specifically Military families for the last 6 years. As a military child, being in a military family often comes with unique issues and challenges, even more-so during this time of COVID. My role as your MFLC is to partner with you to navigate through those issues and help your already resilient family become even more resilient. We can connect in several ways: in person, via video teleconferencing, or by phone. If you have questions or would like to connect with me, I can be reached at (757) 350-9165 or sharris8@magellanhealth.com . I look forward to hearing from and meeting you soon!
The next Parent Connection forum is Dec. 16, 6 p.m. Guests are Marie Renner, Director of Community Partnerships at Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health and Denielle Rigoglioso from Family Insight, P.C., a local group of mental health professionals that serves children and adults with support programs. They will offer guidance for families and providers on navigating parenting, life and the virtual learning environment. We want to thank our PTSA board for decorating LMS in preparation for the Winter Holiday Season. We are so appreciative of their commitment to our school and our staff and we thank them for spreading Holiday Cheer and putting a smile on our faces! They did a great job of decorating the outside main entrance area, inside the main foyer, and the main office. This is another example of how LMS truly is OneTeamOneHeartbeat! Below are some pictures from their great work!
The Virginia Board of Education passed a waiver associated with the grade 8 writing SOL test. This waiver allows divisions to administer a local alternative assessment as a substitute to the SOL test. VB schools will take advantage of this waiver flexibility and will be administering a local alternative assessment which can be administered face-to-face or in a virtual setting. Our grade 8 students who are currently enrolled in English will participate in the alternate assessment during their English course from December 15-18. The results of this assessment will not count as part of a student’s course grade, but the data will be used by teachers to assess each student’s attainment of the writing standards of learning. Additional information will be provided to students by their course teachers.
This is a new opportunity to engage students, families, and school communities with emphasis on our local Black history.

Here at Landstown, virtual learning doesn’t stop us from rewarding positive student behavior! We use the Gotcha system to reinforce students that are exhibiting our 3R’s: being respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. Check out this video that highlights how our Gotcha program works! We appreciate your support as you reinforce these same behaviors at home as well!
(previously published info regarding our program is also shown below)
As part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) initiative, we continue to reward students who are demonstrating our 3 R’s: being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to learn by giving out Lancer Gotchas.
When a teacher rewards a student with a Gotcha, the student receives an email with a personal message and PDF of the Gotcha.
Additionally, each week, one student from each grade level is randomly selected to receive a prize! Please continue to support our positive school culture and climate by encouraging your child to display our 3R’s and follow our school expectations!
After consulting with division leadership and health staff, the Virginia Beach Middle School League (VBMSL) has made the difficult decision to cancel Season 1 VBMSL interscholastic activities, including basketball and Academic Challenge. Reference-VBCPS November 24th email to families.
Our new picture day for 7th graders will be held on Wednesday, January 20th and 8th graders will be held on Thursday, January 21st. Our virtual students and make-ups will be held at a later date. If you have any questions, please email colleen.clukey@vbschools.com
As we approach the Thanksgiving Holidays next week, we want all our Lancer families to know how much we love you and appreciate your continuous support. We truly are One Team, One Heartbeat and we thank you for all that you do to support our students and staff. By working together, we will make it through these challenging times. We hope everyone has a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. As you are aware, VBCPS announced on Monday, November 16, 2020, due to the health metrics for the Eastern Region of Virginia, we have shifted instruction to virtual for all students. VBCPS provided a parent notification with additional information on Thursday, November 19, 2020, which is available in this week’s edition of “The Shield.” In addition, LMS sent an alert now message on Monday, November 16, 2020, with the virtual schedule, which is included in today’s edition as well.
I assure you the LMS staff is prepared for virtual instruction and will continue to deliver the highest quality instruction and support for our families. Please continue to monitor VBCPS messages regarding the current learning plan. As mentioned in the VBCPS family announcement, the health metrics, as explained in the Fall 2020 Plan, are in the yellow/red zones for percent positivity and cases by date reported. Once the trend for the Eastern Virginia Region goes back to yellow/yellow, VBCPS will plan to return all Option 1 students to class after seven days. However, if within those seven days the health metrics trend to any combination that includes red, VBCPS will maintain all virtual instruction and start the seven-day countdown again from whenever those metrics return to yellow/yellow.
As a reminder, Wednesday, November 25 is an adjusted schedule. The adjusted schedule can be found below. Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday next week, our next edition will be Friday, December 4, 2020. We hope you enjoy “The Shield,” and wish everyone a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday. Take care and Go, Lancers!

Lancer Families,
We hope all our Lancer Veterans and families that continue to serve our country had a wonderful Veteran’s Day. As mentioned last week, we are so appreciative of your service to our country and we thank you every day for protecting our freedoms. This week was very exciting as we welcomed back our Option One 8th grade students. Our staff was thrilled to see more students in person, and we look forward to our Option One 7th-graders returning next Tuesday, November 17. Just a reminder, Option One 7th grade students will return to school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning Tuesday, November 17, and Option One 8th Grade students will continue to report to school on Thursdays and Fridays. We want to thank our families that joined us for our Town Hall Meetings. Our goal was to share pertinent information regarding the return to school so that our students and families are aware of our daily routines for face-to-face instruction. If you were not able to join us for the Town Hall meetings, you may access the information in “The Shield.”
On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, all Marking Period 2 grades will be available through Parent Vue. If you would like to request a parent-teacher conference, please contact your student’s school counselor and he or she can schedule an appointment. This is one of the best strategies to improve academic performance so please take advantage of this opportunity. As we begin our 3rd marking period, please continue to monitor your student’s grades, class assignments, and homework. This is critical due to the increased rigor and pacing of the 4 x 4 schedule. Please be aware that your student’s grades for Semester 1(ending January 29) will be their final grade for the courses they are currently enrolled in for the 2020-2021 school year. When Semester 2 begins on February 2, your student will take two new core classes and a new elective class. This week’s edition of “The Shield,” includes information regarding the Semester One 8th Grade English Writing SOL Schedule, Federal Cards, PTSA updates, and Library/Media News. We hope you enjoy this week’s edition of “The Shield,” and we wish everyone a restful and relaxing weekend. Take care and Go, Lancers!

Effective Nov. 30, secondary students will be required to configure and enable password reset and
recovery in ClassLink. The process is simple and involves setting up a mobile number or a series of
recovery questions that students can use to reset or recover a forgotten password. Secondary students will
be prompted to complete this configuration when they login Nov. 30.
Additionally, effective Dec. 14, a policy will be enforced that will require secondary students to change
their passwords every 90 days.
Effective Nov. 9, and in our continued support of all students, students or the
parent/guardian of any student in grades six – 12 may contact their assigned school
counselor to request a preferred name be used in lieu of their legal name in Zoom, Google
Meets and other related applications. The parent/guardian of any student in grades
pre-K – five may request the use of a preferred name.
The request needs to be made in writing (an email will suffice) and the requested name
cannot be disruptive to the educational environment. These requests will be forwarded to
the appropriate building administrator for approval and a record of these requests shall be
maintained by each school separate from students’ cumulative folders. Once approved, the
school counselor may inform the student of the decision and help address any related
questions.
7th and 8th grade parents. We thank you for your patience with this process. Pictures will be forthcoming with our 7th and 8th grade students. With all of the social distancing in place, we have to conduct pictures one grade level at a time. More information to come at a later date. Thank you all again.
Lancer Families,
It is hard to believe we now have completed two full months of this school year. We want to continue to express our gratitude to all our staff, students, and families for their support during this time. As you may be aware, the VBCPS School Board voted and approved the return of Option One 7th and 8th grade students. Option One 7th grade students will return to school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning Tuesday, November 17. Option One 8th Grade students will return to school on Thursdays and Fridays beginning Thursday, November 12. As we prepare to welcome additional students, we understand the importance of assisting all our 7th and 8th grade families who are opting to return to face-to-face instruction. As a strategy to assist our Lancer families who chose this option, we have scheduled three Town Hall meetings for both 7th and 8th grade families so we can review our face-to-face plan and share our health mitigation strategies. Town Hall meetings for both 7th and 8th grade families will be held at 6:00 PM on November 5 (Thursday), November 9 (Monday), and November 10 (Tuesday). If you are interested in attending one of the Town Hall meetings, please follow the meeting link in our newsletter. We hope you enjoy this week’s edition of “The Shield.” Please pay close attention to the new 7th and 8th grade schedules which will begin when Option One 8th grade students return to school on Thursday, November 12. Stay safe and healthy and let’s continue to work together to ensure our students have the best possible learning experience. Go Lancers!

Greetings Lancer Families,
As we reflect on this week and the work that has been accomplished by our powerful learning community, we want to share an important quote from one of the most influential individuals in our recent history, Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The Landstown Middle School learning community is working together every day to provide the best possible educational opportunities for ALL our students and families. As evidence, we are proud to announce that 860 students earned honor roll and 187 of those earned Principal’s List for the 1st Quarter. In addition to our students performing well academically, the Landstown staff has distributed over 600 student recognition “Gotchas” as part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) initiative. We continue to reward students who are demonstrating our 3 R’s: being respectful, responsible, and ready to learn, by giving out Lancer Gotchas and we are so proud that our students have already earned this many since the start of the school year. More will be on the way each week!
Our PTSA rocks! We have exceeded our membership from last year, and we hope ALL our families will join our PTSA. In closing, we thank you for all your support for another outstanding week of teaching and learning at LMS and we hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend. Enjoy this week’s edition of “The Shield.”

To maintain the security of the virtual environment, and to promote positive relationships
between teachers and students, VBCPS is making the following adjustments to remote learning
practices and expectations:
• Students must use their real name (assigned in VUE) as their name in ZOOM and Google
Meets.
• Starting Tuesday, November 4, student cameras must be turned on at the beginning of
class for teachers to verify attendance. This will be the responsibility of each student.
• Students should leave cameras on during live instruction and group work. Cameras may
be turned off during independent work.
• If a student is uncomfortable, he/she may “hide” their own picture using this option on
either platform which still allows for the teacher to see the student.
If you wish to discuss this requirement, please contact your child’s school administrator.
Picture day will be held at school on Thursday, October 29th. All F2F students will be taking their pictures with their 1st class. All virtual 6th graders will be able to come between the hours of 4-6pm to get their picture taken. PLEASE sign up to reserve a spot with this link.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Clukey
Below is our picture ID to pay for pictures online.
School Name: Landstown Middle School
Picture Day ID: EVTQPF3SX
As part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) initiative, we continue to reward students who are demonstrating our 3 R’s: being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to learn by giving out Lancer Gotchas.
Teachers have given out 600 “Gotchas” to date since the start of the school year!
Students may receive free on-demand after school homework assistance, schedule tutoring sessions or complete online modules. Students access this help through ClassLink and the FEV Tutor App. Click here for an Informational Video about the program.
Students, either on their own or collaboratively, are to address the prompts below by submitting drawings, stories, essays, videos, programs, 3D models, papier mâché volcanoes, websites, dance routines, magic tricks or anything else they can submit digitally.
• K - five Contest Prompt: ‘Bringing CS Home - How do you use computer science?’
• Six - 12 Contest Prompt: ‘Planning for your Virtual Future - What would you create using computer science?’
The prompts are designed to encourage students to brainstorm a variety of responses and products. As students work independently or collaboratively to develop possible products, they will be engaged in problem solving and developing the skills encapsulated in the five C’s (critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration and citizenship skills) of Virginia. Products will be judged by a committee composed of individuals who represent CS fields. Student products must be submitted to CS in Your Neighborhood by Monday, Nov. 23 by 5 p.m.
Greetings Lancer Families,
It is hard to believe we are halfway through October and we have completed our 1st marking period. As mentioned last week, please make sure you make time to review your student’s current and 1st reporting period grades in ParentVue. As a reminder, if you would like to set up a parent-teacher conference with your student’s teachers, please contact guidance and they will assist you with scheduling a conference. It is critical for families to continuously monitor their student’s grades and work with our teachers and counselors as we move forward in the academic school year. Please keep in mind, we are currently running a 4 x 4 model which means at the end of this semester, students will receive their final grades for their current classes and will start new classes when we begin Semester 2.
We want to thank our staff, students, and families for an outstanding week. We are proud to announce that we inducted forty-three 8th Graders into our National Junior Honor Society School Chapter. Mrs. Clukey, Mrs. Allen, and Mrs. Nagel organized the event, and we appreciate their efforts preparing our families and students for the ceremony. Due to school closure, we were not able to induct our NJHS students in the Spring, so we celebrated their accomplishments on Tuesday, October 13 through Zoom. In addition to the NJHS induction ceremony, we have completed our 1st full week with our 6th graders. We appreciate our families working with our staff to ensure a safe and structured return to school. In addition, we appreciate the continuous support of all our families that remain Virtual. We understand the challenges that come with virtual learning, but we cannot express how thankful we are for the dedication and commitment of our entire learning community for the success of ALL our students. We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend and enjoy this week’s issue of “The Shield”.

Greetings Lancer Families,
We hope this message finds our Lancer families safe and healthy. Let us first state that our hearts were filled this week when we watched many of our Grade 6 students return to school. We have missed our students and families and although we did not have an opportunity to see everyone, it was so fulfilling to meet and greet our new 6th Grade Lancers as they entered our doors for the first time. It has been too long since closure happened on March 13 and we were so happy to see more students return this week. We enjoyed seeing our families in our Town Hall meetings which helped prepare families for face-to-face instruction. In addition to students returning, our PTSA provided an awesome treat for our staff. On Thursday, October 8, Mrs. Michelle Cannuli, PTSA President, Mrs. Shawnie Green, PTSA Vice President of Programs, and Mrs. Sandy Mealer, Volunteer Coordinator, came to school at 7:30 AM to set up treats and donations from Harris Teeter on Nimmo Parkway.
As we move into October, please make sure you review your student's current and 1st reporting period grades in ParentVue. If you have questions regarding how to access Parent Vue, please visit our website or contact your student's school counselor. If you want to set up a parent-teacher conference with your student's teachers, please contact guidance and they will schedule a conference for you. We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend and enjoy this week’s issue of “The Shield".

Greetings Lancer Families,
We hope you and your families are safe and healthy, and we thank you for your continuous support. As we wrap up the month of September, I can share with you how appreciative we are for the dedication and commitment of our staff, students, families and our entire learning community for making the last 4 weeks of virtual teaching and learning a success. Lancer Families,
We want to thank our families and staff for a fantastic Week Three. We are so proud of our teachers, staff, students, and families for working together to make our virtual learning a success. This week, we were so happy to see some of our students and watch the yellow busses pull up to LMS to begin our day of teaching and learning. It is our honor to introduce our new member of the Lancer Family and our administrative team, Ms. Vashti Richards. Ms. Richards was an Administrative Assistant at Lynnhaven Middle School prior to her appointment to LMS. Lancer Families,
We hope everyone is safe and healthy during these challenging times. Since the school closure on March 13, 2020, our learning community was faced with unprecedented challenges that have altered how public schools operate. Our community was quickly introduced to virtual teaching and learning and although the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we operate on a day-to-day basis, it has never changed our focus as a learning community.
Student academic success continues to be the focus at Landstown Middle School. As demands and complexities of teaching children increase and change as a result of the COVID-19 school closure, it becomes more evident that we all need to work together to ensure that our children reach their fullest potential. We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to empower children with the creative, intellectual, and decision-making skills necessary for them to become academically, socially, physically, and emotionally successful and responsible.
As we prepare to begin the 2020-2021 school year virtually on Tuesday, September 8, we want to share some critical information that will assist your family.
