Brickell Scholars

The E. E. Brickell Scholars Program is designed to promote and recognize academic excellence among high school students in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Traditionally, it is a one-year, five thousand dollar scholarship awarded to one person each year. The recipient is selected from the current year’s designated E. E. Brickell Scholar nominees. In 2016, the award will be six thousand dollars due to increased contributions given to the Rotary Club following Dr. Brickell’s death in June 2015.

The scholarship committee at each high school is to select two students in the spring of their junior year. As seniors, these students will have the opportunity to attend a series of three seminars arranged by members of the Virginia Beach Rotary Club. The recipient of the E. E. Brickell Scholarship will be chosen from this group of scholars. Financial need is not a consideration for the scholarship.

The E. E. Brickell Scholars Selection Committee, appointed by the Virginia Beach Rotary Club Foundation Board, is responsible for the screening of the E. E. Brickell Scholars. Finalists are selected and interviewed in April of their senior year. The recipient of the scholarship is recognized at the annual Virginia Beach Rotary Club Scholarship Dinner that takes place in May. The scholarship money is disbursed directly to the winner by the Virginia Beach Rotary Club.

Students selected for the E. E. Brickell Scholars Program must be a junior in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, have at least a 3.5 grade point average, achieved excellent scores on standardized tests, participate in academically advanced courses and must show evidence of other academically-oriented pursuits and events. The names of students selected by each of the high school scholarship committees must be received in the Office of Gifted Programs in March of the current school year. All E. E. Brickell Scholars requesting consideration for the scholarship award in the senior year must be planning to attend a four-year accredited institution of higher learning.
