In 2001, The Simpsons paid tribute to Flowers for Algernon. Writer Al Jean based the episode on the famous story which he read in high school. In the episode titled "HOMR", the protagonist goes through a journey that is similar to that of Charlie Gordon.
After losing the family's life savings in the stock market, Homer gets a job as a test subject for scientific experiments, one of which reveals the true reason behind his stupidity. He undergoes a surgical procedure that increases his intelligence, and he consequently learns a valuable lesson about friends, family, and happiness.
