Getting Ready to Start School
Here are some ideas of ways that you can support your child to get ready for school;
Developing Independence
Supporting your child to become more independent will help their transition to school and build their confidence. Ways you can support your child to do this are by teaching them to pack their own school bag, and carry it themselves. Support them to check themselves that they have: snack food, morning tea and lunch, drink bottle and hat.
Toileting
Support your child to be independent with their toileting; things you can you think about are:
Whether they can go to the toilet when they need to?
Can they wipe themselves clean?
Are they able to wash and dry their hands?
At school children can go to the toilet whenever they need to. We understand that accidents can happen, so please have a spare change of clothes just in case.
Dressing
The teachers will support your child with dressing if needed, but these are good skills to practise at home before starting school:
Can your child put on and do up their own shoes?
Can s/he put on their own socks?
Can s/he do up their own buttons?
Can s/he undress and dress if they happen to have an accident at school / get wet playing with water / play in the mud / go swimming?
If they can't do these things it is a good idea to practise them before starting school.
