WHAT'S NEW...
Your Vaux Emergency Preparedness Committee is pleased to announce that our community's own emergency alert system, approved by the Board in January, is now in place and just days away from going live.
The system is called Regroup. It allows us to send time-critical alerts (i.e. building evacuation, shelter-in-place, all-clear) directly to you via SMS/text, phone, and/or email.
A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE, HERE?
IN PORTLAND?
Magnitude 8.0 to 8.5
The USGS estimates a 40% probability of a M8.0-8.5 rupture on the Cascadian Subduction Zone within the next 50 years (i.e. any minute now.) A quake at that scale releases the energy equivalent of 1,000 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs – not in an instant, but sustained over 3 to 5 minutes of continuous violent shaking.
Magnitude 9.0+
The Oregon Resilience Plan estimates an 18% probability of a full-margin M9.0+ Cascadia rupture in the same window. That event would release the energy equivalent of over 30,000 Hirshima bombs, liquify soils across the Portland basin, collapse the Burnside and Morrison bridges, and cut off NW Portland from emergency services, power and water for days – perhaps weeks.
THE QUESTION ISN'T WHETHER. IT'S WHETHER YOU'LL BE READY.
