Fashion Week Street Style: I Want it All!

If you’ve ever been to New York City during the summertime, you know the weather is brutal. Humid temperatures took over the streets and required New York Fashion Week attendees to dress for the occasion. Long lines outside of shows like Son Jung Wan forced me to reminisce on my home life back in Florida with air conditioning blowing in my face, but such eccentric street style allowed me to forget my woes for just a moment. Drenched in sweat and armed with a handheld fan in hand, I observed a variety of looks that inspired me to get creative with pieces I already had in my own closet. Don’t you love when that happens?

Channeling my Inner School Girl

A trend conglomerate, this attendee is most certainly in prep school dress code. Spotted outside the Sandy Liang show, maxi pleated skirts have made their way out of a stuffy biology classroom and onto the streets of New York Fashion Week. The only accessory missing is a belt—oh wait, it’s on the tank top straps! Revamping the traditional aesthetics and flipping them on their heads is the 2023 fashion mantra it seems. The juxtaposition between the Y2K silver sunnies and the preppy skirt breaks all fashion rules in the best way possible.

The Denim Skirt

Taking casual Friday to a whole other level, I spotted countless denim skirts littering the streets of New York City. Pictured here, this midi skirt was completely demolished at the edges, adding bold dimension to the feminine sensibility up top. Paired with black kitten heels, Maggie McCormack created an effortlessly chic look with minimal jewelry, a common theme of 2023. Puffy, oversized rosettes are always a good idea, too.

Bows Galore

The abundance of bows this New York Fashion Week celebrates girlhood in the chicest way possible. Reversing the common narrative of being associated with silliness and frivolity, bows are surfacing as a style staple this year. Isabella Ricci upcycled a vintage Betsey Johnson dress and neatly tied it up in a homemade bow, adding a rosette from the Loveshackfancy x gap collection. Oh, and the choker? It looks like 2016 style is coming back—but did it ever leave? Serving as a token of romantic femininity, I vote that bows stay topical. For girlhood’s sake, of course.
