Please read! New for 2026!!
*If you see your school and your major, APPLY NOW!!
Good morning.
We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2026 Cleveland Touchdown Club Charities Memorial Scholarships. This year, we will be awarding five deserving Northeast Ohio students a $1,000 scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year. Our memorial scholarships honor of Morrie Kono, John Peyton, Billy Reynolds and Dick Zunt, and for a fourth-consecutive year, a scholarship in the name of Gene Hickerson. Learn more about each honoree below.
Morrie Kono started with the Cleveland Browns in 1946; he was the team’s equipment manager from 1948-74, before moving into the role of a consultant until 1979. Known for his stories and ability to keep the locker room loose, he was an integral part of the day to day operations of the team for over 30 years.
In high school, John Peyton did not play any team sports; however, he demonstrated his spirit and desire to help by acting as the manager of many of his high school’s teams. Peyton was a two-time past President of CTCC and passed away in 2000.
Billy Reynolds was a former President of CTCC, who made the club an active civic sports organization in the Greater Cleveland area and who dedicated his life to youth and athletics. A halfback for the Cleveland Browns from 1953-57, he made Cleveland his home after retirement until his passing in 2002.
Dick Zunt was actively involved with CTCC. He was a long-time reporter for the Plain Dealer for over 43 years covering the local high school sports community. He passed away in 2010.
Gene Hickerson played for the Cleveland Browns from 1958-73 as an offensive guard. He was known as the "messenger" guard and established himself as the lead blocker for three future Hall of Fame running backs, Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Bobby Mitchell. He passed away in 2008.
The applicant must be a graduating high school senior and show merit and need to be considered for a scholarship. In addition, the applicant must have participated in his or her high school athletic team programs in a non-athletic manner (i.e. team manager, statistician, photographer/videographer, sports writer, team booster, etc.).
Please share the attached application - and website link containing more information, including the attached application - with any students you feel qualify within any of your sports programs. Deadline for receipt of applications is Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Recipients and a guest will also be requested to attend our annual Gene Hickerson Memorial Golf Outing dinner on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Medina for recognition of their achievements by our club and our sponsors. Details will be provided after the announcement of the winners.
Thank you for passing this information on to provide your students with additional scholarship opportunities. It's really an easy application to complete...encourage them to take a chance!
Best Regards,
Dallas Moyer
President
