This classic play is simple on its surface. A group of actors and a Stage Manager, working on a nearly-empty stage, create a town in New England around 1900, filling it with the townspeople and their day-to-day life. Act One is about a day in the town; Act Two is love and marriage; Act Three is about death.
Although the means and the language are simple, few would disagree with playwright Edward Albee when he said Our Town is "the greatest American play ever written."
We will have five performances of Our Town:
Friday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 6, 7 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 7, 3:30 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 12, 7 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m.
Our Town is being staged, in part, as part of the Introduction to Theatre Arts class. A lot of the rehearsals will take place in class sessions. The ensemble will mostly consist of class members. But students from outside of the class can also audition and rehearse after school, the way we usually do. We will merge the two groups in rehearsals near the end and, magically, it will just all flow together. (Trust and believe.)
This means that if you are not in the class and want to audition, you should. That is what the October 16 auditions are for.
Rehearsals for the show will start after school on Monday, October 20, usually going 3:00-4:40. Not everyone will have to attend every rehearsal. To help with the merger of cast members, there will be extra rehearsals -- two of them -- between the first and second weekend. More details to come.
I have chosen one scene from the play for everyone to perform at auditions. It is between Emily and George, who in Act 1 are young teenagers just beginning to be drawn to each other. Emily loves school but tries to hide it; George thinks only of farming and baseball but is impressed by this neighbor girl with her school skills.
I do not expect you to memorize this scene. You can choose a scene partner if you want, or we will use who we have.
Choose one of the three monologues in this packet and memorize it. I really am looking for flawless memorization, particularly if you are reading for Stage Manager (memorization is the major challenge of this role). Show your feel for what the character is feeling.
