Here you will meet our department heads, learn about this year's shows, and, if you like, get a tour of the theater. Families and volunteers are welcome!
If you cannot be at this meeting, find Mr. James or write to him (ajames@vashonsd.org) and he will find a time to catch you up.
Auditions are on Wednesday and Thursday, September 23 & 24, right after school. If you want to audition:
Read through this packet — it's important!
Attend the audition workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 16, right after school until 4 p.m.
Fill out this form.
This is a musical, and will involve you choosing one minute of singing to perform in the audition. You will also be asked to move some, according the choreographer's instructions. You will also need to act. All of this will be made clear by November. Auditions are on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 2 & 3.
Anyone who wants to be part of this student-devised children's show will be in. You only need to be able to miss some school to perform at Chautauqua and a school off-Island. You will also need to be available on the evening of Friday, June 4 at the First Friday in Vashon town.
Exact dates, times, and instructors for these sessions will be announced ASAP.
Find your path: For those who want to do some work backstage, this set of three workshops will help you find your place in our productions. Even actors should attend! Four sessions:
Wednesday, Sept. 9, 3-4 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 11, 3-4 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 14, 3-4 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 16, 3-4 p.m.
Costumes: We have a very costume-rich season this year and want to train up a terrific team. We will have quick workshops in procurement, construction, tailoring, sketching, hair, and makeup.
Dates TBD, starting in third week of September.
Vocal Startup: This will be an especially good workshop for those who have never sung before, or have never sung in harmony. Learn a show tune or two and start getting your strongest voice dialed in. Four sessions:
Tuesday, Sep. 8, 3:00-4:15 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 10, 3:00-4:15 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 15, 3:00-4:15 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 17, 3:00-4:15 p.m. (at the same time as callbacks for Once in a Lifetime, but we will bend the schedule for that).
Props and gadgets workshop: Our March musical, Big Fish, is going to need a river and a witch and a giant and many other magical bits of stage business. Come work with Drama Dock designers to make this wild scenery happen.
Movement: Don't be afraid of moving around onstage, even to music. Hey, we can even call it "dancing" and it will be okay. Come learn some fundamentals of movement from an Island choreographer.
Show choir: We will continue singing together, and maybe even learn some songs from a show -- maybe even from a show called Big Fish.
Note that everything in these workshops gears us up to perform for young audiences in a show that we devise.
Improv: Create comedy on the fly. Learn how to build a scene in sync from almost nothing.
Writing: Starting from building the tiniest sketches, we learn what writing for performance is like, and how to give actors the tools they need to make audiences laugh and/or gasp.
Puppetry: It's time to start working with some marionettes, a little theatre, and your voices.
