Welcome to the Varndean School
Summer Reading Challenge!
Why read? Here are all of the compelling reasons as to why you should pick up a book this summer.
Six minutes of silent reading can reduce stress levels by a whopping 68%!
Reading for at least 30 minutes a day extended the lifespan by an average of two years.
Reading is also known to help you sleep, delay dementia in later life, and improve relationships through a developed sense of empathy.
‘Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.’ Many historical leaders were known to be avid readers, and some of the most successful business leaders such as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Elon Musk have associated reading with their career success.
So, be a part of this year's Summer Reading Challenge so we can celebrate your achievements and share the books you have enjoyed with the Varndean community!
All entries will get 5 achievement points and be entered in to the final draw with voucher prizes for the best in each year as well as the overall best in KS3 and KS4.
Why not read the same book as your friends by choosing 'Sweet Reads'?
The National Read Aloud Challenge with Fonetti
Practice reading aloud for 20 minutes a day! Fonetti will build your confidence with reading aloud and monitor your progress.
Step 1: Register as a 'Parent' here.
Step 2: Go to app.fonetti.com or download the app directly to your tablet to start reading aloud.
All students in KS4 can now claim their Varndean reading badges (VR) and, if you complete one of the levels over the Summer Holiday, you will be entered into a Prize Draw for a Gift Voucher.
