Filly Afenegus has been the head girls’ coach at Columbia River High School since 2012. During that time the program has been able to win 8 League, 2 Bi-District and 3 District titles. In addition, while at the helm Filly has been able to help guide River to 3 state championships (2012, 2016, 2019).
Prior to his time at River, Filly earned his USSF National B License and spent time coaching at both
Clark College and Western Washington University.
In addition, he played collegiately at Western Washington University where he was a two-time all-league selection and is still in the top 5 for career appearances.
When he is not on the soccer field he loves to spend time with his wife (Tiffany) and his 3 children Maia, Ella and Noah.
Ryan has been Filly's right hand man at River since starting coaching in 2013. He is currently a varsity assistant coach and the goalkeepers coach with the girls program. During that time Ryan has helped develop two first team all-league goalkeeper, three goalkeepers who have gone on to play collegiately and one league defensive MVP. While apart of the coaching staff, the girls program has been able to win 7 league titles, 5 district titles and 2 state titles.
Ryan was a 4 year letter winner as a goalkeeper at Ridgefield, where the Spudders appeared in two state championships. Ryan was 1st team all-league and all-state in 2005, his senior year. Ryan is an AVID WSU fan where he completed his undergrad in Sociology. After a year of working in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins Ryan came home and after a couple years of working in schools and coaching Ryan finally completed his Masters in Teaching at Concordia and now teaches Middle School at Gaiser Middle School.
In his free time, Ryan enjoys golfing and spending time with his fiancé (Allie) and their two dogs Rivers and Gus.
Matt Newman has been the JV girl’s coach at Columbia River High School since 2016. Matt began coaching youth soccer in Clark County since 2010 with experience coaching high school, club, and individually specifically with goalkeepers.
Matt has experience as a multi-sport D-3 athlete playing Football and Tennis at Illinois College. Matt received his BS in Health Studies: Community Health Education degree from Portland State and currently working on his M. Ed in School Counseling from City University of Seattle. Growing up Matt played soccer for FC Vancouver, Tri-Mountain Soccer Club, and Ridgefield High School. At Ridgefield High School, Matt earned a varsity letter all four years in soccer. Also earning multiple First Team All-League honors in both soccer and football at Ridgefield High School.
Matt’s influence to coach comes from his father who coached him in club and his final two seasons of high school soccer. His father is the longest tenured boy’s soccer coach at Ridgefield High School. Matt is extremely family oriented and loves spending time watching, talking, and playing soccer with them. The Newman family regularly attends Columbia River soccer games.
Geneva '13 has been a volunteer for the girl's soccer team at Columbia River High School since 2017. She enjoys being a mentor and role model for the girls as she is River Soccer Alumni. One of Geneva's many strengths is her ability build relationships allowing her to mentor players about how to manage emotions on and off the field.
Geneva has experience as a D-3 JV athlete playing soccer for California Lutheran University. Growing up she played soccer for FC Salmon Creek, FC Vancouver, Pacific FC, and Columbia River High School. Geneva was part of Coach Afenegus' first girl's soccer State Champion team 2012.
Geneva's love for the game comes from her parents. Growing up her father was her coach and her mother provided the emotional support through the countless injuries. Geneva has a degree in Exercise Science, Spanish, and is a recent graduate from Nursing School.
