Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we welcome the month of March, we are entering a very important time in the school year. With the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) assessments right around the corner, every instructional day counts. Daily attendance is absolutely critical to ensure our students are fully prepared and confident.
We need your partnership now more than ever. You can support your child by:
Ensuring they attend school every day and arrive on time
Encouraging them to stay focused and actively engaged in class
Talking with them about doing their best and believing in their abilities
In addition to academic preparation, we are continuing to emphasize the importance of being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe at school. Please take a few moments to talk with your child about their behavior choices. Remind them to:
Treat teachers, staff, and classmates with respect
Take responsibility for their learning and actions
Make safe choices throughout the school day
When school and home work together, our students thrive. Your encouragement, conversations at home, and daily support truly make a difference in your child’s success.
Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to our school community. Together, we will finish this school year strong!
Respectfully,

Mozart Elementary's Core Values
Supporting Our Core Values at Home
At Mozart Elementary, we work every day to help students live out our core values: Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful. These values guide our expectations, shape our school culture, and help students develop strong habits that will serve them well in and out of the classroom. Your partnership in reinforcing these messages at home makes a tremendous difference.
Here are a few simple ways families can help support these core values:
Be Safe
Talk with your child about safe choices—online, at home, and in the community.
Establish routines like consistent bedtimes, healthy meals, and safe technology use.
Encourage them to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.
Be Responsible
Help your child practice responsibility by setting up a spot for their backpack, homework, and school materials.
Encourage them to take ownership of their actions, finish tasks, and ask for help when needed.
Model responsibility by following through on commitments and showing how to manage time.
Be Respectful
Practice active listening at home—taking turns speaking and acknowledging others’ feelings.
Encourage your child to use kind words and show empathy toward family members, friends, and classmates.
Model respectful communication, even during disagreements.
When students see these values emphasized both at home and at school, they learn that these expectations are not just rules, but lifelong skills. Thank you for your partnership and support in helping our students grow into safe, responsible, and respectful young people. Together, we build a strong and caring school community.
Positive self-esteem is crucial for overall well-being and success. It influences how individuals perceive themselves and interact with the world, impacting various life aspects such as relationships, career, and mental health.
Benefits of Positive Self-Esteem
Improved Mental Health: High self-esteem is linked to lower levels of anxiety and depression. Individuals with positive self-regard are more resilient in facing challenges.
Better Relationships: Those with healthy self-esteem tend to form more fulfilling relationships, as they are more likely to communicate effectively and set boundaries.
Increased Motivation: A positive self-image fosters motivation and encourages individuals to pursue their goals, leading to greater achievements.
Building Positive Self-Esteem
Self-Compassion: Practicing self-compassion helps individuals acknowledge their flaws without harsh self-criticism, promoting a healthier self-view.
Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: Recognizing and challenging negative thoughts can enhance self-esteem over time.
Understanding Mindfulness
Mindfulness involves being present and fully engaged in the moment, which helps individuals recognize and accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment. This practice can lead to improved self-esteem by reducing negative self-talk and promoting a kinder self-view.
Benefits of Mindfulness on Self-Esteem
Increased Self-Awareness: Mindfulness encourages individuals to observe their thoughts and feelings, helping them identify and challenge negative beliefs about themselves.
Reduction of Stress: Mindfulness practices can lower stress levels, which often contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth.
Promotion of Self-Compassion: By treating oneself with kindness, individuals can cultivate a more positive self-image.
Practical Steps to Enhance Self-Esteem through Mindfulness
Challenge Negative Beliefs: Identify and question core beliefs that contribute to low self-esteem.
Practice Positive Self-Talk: Replace negative thoughts with affirmations to build a more positive self-image
Deep breathing. Deep breathing reduces anxiety by slowing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and triggering a feeling of relaxation. Concentrating on breathing also distracts from negative thoughts related to testing. Deep breathing is discreet, effective, and easy to use. Here’s how to practice:
Sit back in a comfortable position, and close your eyes if you feel comfortable doing so. TIP: When learning deep breathing, place one hand on your abdomen so you can feel it rise and fall with each breath.
Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds.
Hold the air in your lungs for 4 seconds (or less, if this becomes uncomfortable).
Pucker your lips, and slowly exhale through your mouth. Time the exhalation to last 6 seconds. TIP: For practice, try exhaling through a straw. This will get you in the habit of exhaling slowly.
Repeat the breathing cycle for at least two minutes.

Attendance Matters
At Mozart Elementary, we know that every minute of learning counts! When students arrive late, leave early, or miss a day, they miss valuable instruction, discussions, and activities that support both academic and social growth. Even small amounts of missed time can make it harder for students to stay on track, as key lessons and practice opportunities are difficult to make up later. Over time, those few minutes here and there truly add up.
We understand that appointments and family needs sometimes can’t be avoided. Whenever possible, please try to schedule these outside of school hours and help your child be at school on time and ready to learn each day.
Instruction begins at 8:00 a.m. Please ensure students arrive on time so they are ready to start the day and not miss valuable learning.
Dismissal is at 3:45 p.m. Parents, please make the necessary arrangements to have students picked up promptly at dismissal time.
Early pick-up cut-off time is 3:00 p.m. To minimize classroom interruptions and ensure a smooth end to the school day, early dismissals must occur before this time.
Thank you for your cooperation and support to ensure every student has the best opportunity to succeed!

Language Arts Update:
In Language Arts, students just finished learning about fairy tales! They had the opportunity to dress up as their favorite fairy tale character and present to the class about their story elements. These were some of the stories represented: Jack and the Beanstalk, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince, Rumpelstiltskin, and Rapunzel!
2nd Grade
Mrs. Cavazos' class actively engage with Curilive to predict outcomes, answer questions, illustrate key concepts, and summarize their learning in meaningful ways. As part of their insect study, learning was enriched by a special student contribution—Sofia Calderon proudly shared a handmade, knitted beehive and bees, using her creation to teach classmates about bees and their role in nature. This thoughtful presentation sparked curiosity, discussion, and excitement, making learning both creative and memorable.
Growing as learners while celebrating the 100th Day of School! In Mrs. Montoya's students became young geologists as they learned about different types of rocks while collecting rocks during recess and examining them in class, making real-world connections and having meaningful discussions about their observations. During math time, students are exploring arrays and equal groups, building a strong foundation for multiplication. They proudly shared their thinking with classmates by stepping into the role of mini teachers, explaining their strategies and showcasing their work!
Students in Mrs. Madrigal’s class are strengthening their reading and word-building skills through engaging, hands-on literacy activities. Students practiced building words, then worked with reading buddies to read, discuss, and support one another. These collaborative experiences help build confidence, fluency, and a love for reading while encouraging teamwork and learning connections.
In Mrs. Vazquez' class, students engaged in hands-on math activities by representing arrays and equal groups using real-life objects and even creating human groups of 3 to deepen their understanding. They identified rows and columns while explaining their thinking and buildling math vocabulary. In science, students explored the concept of temperature by measuring with thermometers, making real-world connections through their observation and discussion. These interactive experiences are encouraging curiosity and active learning!
3rd Grade
This month, our students have been working hard on strengthening their reading skills! 📚✨
Students practiced annotating their texts by highlighting unknown words and using context clues to figure out their meanings. It was wonderful to see them thinking deeply, making notes in the margins, and discussing their ideas with partners.
We are so proud of how they are becoming stronger, more independent readers by using strategies to understand challenging vocabulary. Keep up the great work, 3rd Grade readers!
4th Grade
February was a month full of learning, celebration, and memorable moments for our fourth graders. From hands‑on classroom activities to special campus events, students had so many opportunities to shine. This month reminded us how much they are growing, not just academically, but in confidence, teamwork, and curiosity.
As you look through these photos, you’ll see snapshots of the hard work, creativity, and excitement your children bring to school each day. Thank you for supporting them, encouraging them, and partnering with us to make these experiences possible. We are so proud of everything they accomplished in February and can’t wait to see what March brings!
5th Grade
Working together to think critically! 🌊📚
Students in Mrs. Vasquez's class collaborated to analyze the argumentative text Volunteer to Clean Beaches and Rivers, identifying the author’s claim and examining how facts and opinions were used to support it. After close reading and discussion, they used evidence from the text to explain how the author builds a strong argument encouraging readers to take action and volunteer. This review strengthened their understanding of argumentative text structure and the power of evidence-based reasoning.
Students in Mr. Rios' class explored the phases of the moon in a hands-on science lab using Oreos to model each stage—from new moon to full moon. By shaping the cream filling to represent the changing appearance of the moon, they were able to visualize and better understand how the moon’s phases occur. A fun (and delicious!) way to bring science concepts to life!
Students in Ms. Renteria's class worked together to create posters showing how plants and animals survive in a healthy ecosystem. By exploring how living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) factors like sunlight, water, plants, and animals interact, students shared their understanding of how ecosystems support life. Collaboration, creativity, and scientific thinking were on full display!
Creativity inspired by culture and history 🎨🪶
After reading about Culturas indígenas del noroeste del Pacífico, students in Mr. Lozano's class extended their learning by designing their own totem poles. Each student carefully selected animals that represent their personality, strengths, and values—just as many Native communities used symbols to tell stories and share identity. They thoughtfully used only colors that could be naturally replicated in nature, honoring traditional artistic practices. A beautiful blend of literacy, social studies, and creativity!
Fine Arts
Exploring Empathy Through Art 🎨💛
Our students spent time in Art Class diving into Character Strong lessons focused on empathy and kindness. Through creative drawing, storytelling, and thoughtful discussions, they explored what it means to understand others’ feelings and show compassion in our school community.
Proud of the heart and creativity our young artists shared! 🌟
5th Grade Dance Project Presentation
Fifth-grade students researched and presented a dance genre of their choice using Canva. They shared the history and key features of their dance style through visuals and an oral presentation.
This project helped students build research, creativity, public speaking, and digital skills while learning to appreciate different cultures and express themselves confidently.
Girl Scouts
Girl Scout Troop 1104 at Mozart Elementary is now celebrating its 4th year! What started with just 7 girls has grown into a strong, vibrant Troop of 27 Girl Scouts and 23 dedicated parent volunteers. Together, they’ve built a community of creativity, leadership, and friendship that continues to grow each year.
🌿 Troop 1104 Is Growing Something Beautiful! 🌿
Our Girl Scouts have officially begun their Journey into gardening, using resources wisely, and caring for the environment! 🌎✨
This week, the girls accepted an exciting challenge—to design, plant, and nurture a community garden at our school. From sketching their own garden layouts to planting the very first seeds, Troop 1104 is learning the power of teamwork, responsibility, and giving back to the earth. 🌱🪴
We can’t wait to watch their garden (and their leadership skills!) bloom. 💚🌼
