College is post-secondary education that includes two-year associate degrees, four-year bachelor's degrees, career certificates, and trade apprenticeships that directly prepare students to work.
Post secondary education widens a student's career choices. Beyond expanding access to higher-paying fields, credentials help job applicants stand out
The goal of finding an academic match is to find a program with a courseload and coursework that matches their learning strengths and interests. A quality academic match comes down to aligning a student's high school grades, difficulty of classes, and test scores with an institution's average student. A good match also considers graduation retention rates, out-of-class opportunities (like research), and course requirements for their intended major.
A personal fit considers the day-to-day of the student. A good fit supports a student's well-being and accomodates their financial situation. This involves several core factors: overall attendance costs, campus culture, location, and campus support services (like mental health care and career centers).
Students can use a college's net price calculator, join a campus tour, and talk with current undergrads. The financial aid and disabilities offices will also be helpful resources towards building an accurate picture of life on campus.
The state of Michigan and federal government have been expanding resources offered to prospective college students. This makes it more possible for highschool students to continue their education.
