• Color: One of the building blocks of design. It can be used for the focal point, subject, background, or to fill other elements.
• Value: The range of lightness and darks of a hue. Value can be used in both black and white and color design. Value can create emphasis, a focal point, divide space, create a mood, and direct the viewer’s eye.
• Line: One of the building blocks of design. Can be thick, thin, solid, broken, curved, diagonal. Line can help divide a space, emphasize a focal point, add pattern and texture.
• Shape: One of the building blocks of design. Shape is defined by boundaries such as line and color. Shape can create pattern, interest, define space, control the viewer’s eye, emphasize the focal point, and organize information.
• Form: One of the building blocks of design. Include geometric and organic form, actual and implied form. Form is used in the physical design of objects as well as to enhance design in print media such as billboards, magazines, or digital designs.
• Space: The area in an object or distance around and between objects in a design. Space is used to create white space, breathing space, and emphasize the focal point. When divided well, space can create stronger designs.
• Texture: One of the building blocks of design. Texture can be tactile or visual. Texture can be used to create pattern, rhythm, contrast, and emphasize areas.
• Typography: The fonts and fonts styles used in a design. Font can convey information as well as add to the overall feeling of a design. Color, style, placement, and hierarchy can be used to help enhance typography in a design.
Principles of Design
In order to complete this assignment you must create a Kami account using your school's Google email. Once that has been completed you can download the handouts in the link below, unload them to Kami to complete. (This is temporary until our laptops arrive)
VOCABULARY:
• Principles of design: Rules that guide a successful design and strong composition through the use of balance, contrast, emphasis, hierarchy, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm, repetition, unity, variety, and white space.
• Balance: Placing elements in a design taking their visual weight, and positive and negative space into account. Balance can be created through symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial balance.

• Emphasis: Bringing focus to the most important information in a design.
• Hierarchy: The intentional arrangement of information in a design to highlight the most important information.
• Movement: the way the viewer’s eye moves around the composition of a design.
• Pattern: The regular repetition of elements to create a design.
• Proportion: The visual scale and weight of elements and how they relate to each other.
• Repetition: Duplicating elements in a design to bring focus to certain areas and unify the design.
• Rhythm: Elements that repeat in an organized way that creates movement and helps move the viewer’s eye around the design.
• Unity: When elements harmonize creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.
• Variety: Using a range of types and styles of elements to create visual interest in a design.
• White space: Negative or empty space between elements and content in a design.
