Ethnic studies is the interdisciplinary study of difference—chiefly race, ethnicity, and nation, but also sexuality, gender, andother such markings—and power, as expressed by the state, by civil society, andby individuals. This course includes a study of the histories, culture, andcommunities of racial minorities. It will explore the origin, nature, andmeaning of racial diversity in order to become more politically, socially, andeconomically conscious.
What is the graduation requirement for Ethnic Studies?
Beginning with the incoming freshmen class forthe school year of 2019-2020, Class of 2023, all students must have completed a10 unit two semester Ethnic Studies course, during their four-year high schoolexperience.
How will the graduation requirement beimplemented?
All three high schools, CHHS, OVHS, and RVHS,will offer Ethnic Studies courses to all students beginning with the 2020-2021school year. All three high schools will offer interdisciplinary Ethnic Studiescourses in core content areas such as: history, English, math,foreignlanguage, and electives so that students can satisfy the graduation requirement.
Does this requirement increase the number ofcredits students need to graduate?
No. The Ethnic Studies graduation requirement isembedded into the 220 credits needed for graduation from VVUSD high schools. All Ethnic Studies courses will be VVUSD Board approved and A-G approved by UCOP prior to being offered tostudents in VVUSD.
Will Ethnic Studies courses conflict with othercourse offerings and academic programs requirements?
No. Ethnic Studies may be fulfilled through theelective credits needed for graduation or through core courses. Forexample, students can fulfill their graduation requirements for English bytaking Ethnic Studies Courses like Puente, World Lit CP or future fine artscourses like Ethnic Studies Dance.
Is there just one “Ethnic Studies” course, orwill there be choices?
There will be more than one choice for studentsto take. Each high school will offer the Race and Society Senior Elective and avariety of Ethnic Studies courses in history, English, math, Spanish, and college-prep electives. Some schools may choose to offer the additional EthnicStudies courses such as, Multicultural Literature, Chicano Studies, Chicana/oLatina/o Literature, Social Justice Courses, and Statistics for Social Justicedepending on their school needs, staffing, and educational programing.
