A personal statement is an essay that helps a school understand the values, skills, interests, and qualities you bring to that campus and community. Schools use it to get a feel for who you are and, in some ways, how you and the school fit together.
Why create a Personal Statement ?
A personal statement’s goal isn’t simply to show your academic interests and accomplishments. Instead, its purpose is to help schools get a feel for the human being behind those things such as the moments, experiences, and insights that have shaped you.
Brainstorm/ Plan before writing
(think about what you are going to write, write ideas, think about how you will piece together everything)
Do your research
( research what your interests are, what major you are interested in and why, what motivated you or why you want to be in that major)
Think about your audience
( Know who you are writing to so you can use the right language and tone to use, what information to use, and how to structure your personal statement)
Stay on topic
( It will help the reader keep track of what they are reading and keep the structure of your personal statement organized and straight to the point)
Stay Focused
( Concentrate on what you are writing, think about it, discuss it and remember what you are writing and to who)
Stay true to your voice
( Expressing yourself, your thoughts, being seen/heard in your own authentic way)
Proofread
( Read your statement aloud to hear how it sounds, look out for grammar mistakes, double check everything, read slowly and carefully, and have someone else read it)
