From Jessie Smallwood: I think it is quite fitting that Dr. Bouyer be recognized for his dedication as a research mentor. Working in his laboratory, not only provides students with an understanding of several scientific techniques, but also strengthens student writing, and makes students into independent scientists. I have had the privilege of working under his tutelage, and have the ability now to present real-world skills to other labs in industry, and to medical schools. I think that if any science or premedical student seeks success as an undergraduate, it would be in their best interest to seek out Dr. Bouyer’s lab.
From Alan Bridgmon: I didn’t meet Dr. Bouyer until my final year of undergrad, but he was definitely transformative in the way I view education. Dr. Bouyer took a chance on me, a senior without any real research experience, and thrust me into an environment where I could grow, both as a student and as a professional. Dr. Bouyer doesn’t have a one size fits all approach with his research students, but instead he molds the experience to the individual. In my case, I was allotted freedom to learn as quickly as I felt comfortable when it came to the research or the procedures we performed. This method allowed me to push myself to a point where I was constantly learning, yet not overwhelmed. While I was free to work and learn at my own pace, Dr. Bouyer was constantly involved in providing feedback and was very approachable when it came to problems that may spring up
From Kelli Cook: I had the pleasure of working in Dr. Bouyer's lab during my senior year at Valparaiso. The experience and knowledge I gained by working in his lab was a vital component of my undergraduate studies. Doing research with Dr. Bouyer was the single most valuable experience that prepared me for the workforce and further graduate studies. After graduation, my accomplishments in Dr. Bouyer’s lab Dr. Bouyer was constantly providing us with invaluable opportunities. While working in his lab, I had the opportunity of presenting my research at numerous conferences. Dr. Bouyer also helped us get our research published- a rare privilege for an undergraduate student. Dr. Bouyer was always more than willing to teach us, expose us to new ideas, and only wanted to see us succeed. Dr. Bouyer served as one of the most influential and impactful professors that I was mentored by at Valparaiso University. I will be forever grateful for the experiences and knowledge that I gained from this opportunity. I hope that many students after me can have the same experience that I did.
From Emily Hughes : I had the opportunity to spend two years doing research under Dr. Bouyer. Dr. Bouyer was so knowledge and his main goal was to share his knowledge with his students. Before doing research with Dr. Bouyer, I had not previously had interest in research. Through his guidance, patience, and teaching, I discovered that I enjoy research and want to continue performing research in graduate school. Now I am a dental student at Indiana University School of Dentistry, where I am conducting research on dental materials. I attribute my passion, knowledge, and drive for research to Dr. Bouyer. Forever grateful for Dr. Bouyer and for all the opportunities he has given me. Despite the amount of time that has passed, Dr. Bouyer continues to care and check on his lab students.
