After a lifetime of adventure, business, and love, Alfred passed away on January 26, 2001, at the age of 77. Alfred had summed up his life in the United States with the following words for his grandchildren: “Suffice it to say for now, that I had a fulfilling and fairly successful life here in the U.S.A., and that I am grateful for my family and especially having you as my grandchildren.”[1]

Alfred’s daughter, Debra remembers her father as a good businessman and an adventurous person who liked to explore and go hiking. When asked about the collection of materials that document her father’s life and has been used to create this website, Debra said that, as a family of educators, the Brosans hope that Alfred’s story can be used as a vehicle to help students and others understand the Holocaust and gain another perspective on Shanghailanders and their journey. We hope this website helps toward the fulfillment of this goal.
