All second grade students participate in a universal screening test in the spring to allow an opportunity to be considered for the program starting in 3rd grade. Students that score well will be invited to continue with the identification process and parent consent will be obtained.
Fourth and fifth grade students can be recommended by teachers or parents for testing. Students with high ISATs in both reading and math, may be automatically referred for GT testing in the fall.
Identification is based on multiple criteria. Academic scores, GT testing scores, and parent and teacher checklists are all important criteria on our district matrix used for identification.
Pre-referrals and auto-referrals take place in the spring. At that time, the GT staff will ask teachers if they would like to recommend any current students for testing the following year. Additionally, all ISAT scores for 3rd and 4th grade students will be reviewed; students that score at or near the 92 percentile in both ELA and Math and have not been recommended, will be added to the list to be tested. During the spring referrals, teacher checklists will be completed. Parents will be notified in the fall.
