Professional Philosophy Statement
Shortly after I graduated from college, I sat down and mapped out what I wanted my career to look like. I graduated with a degree in Business Operations Management and I had identifiable success goals that I wanted to accomplish in my career. I am a planner at heart and so this was a natural next step for me since I had attained a significant goal in my life. I identified specific criteria for different events and positions that I wanted to achieve throughout my career. One position that I knew that I wanted to attain was to become a teacher and a coach. So, I sat down and mapped this out on a timeline and yes, we are now here.
I've been asked “Why?” I became a teacher because I had some great teachers throughout my educational career as well as my industry career. It was these resources that helped me to identify how important it is to provide more than just academic or theoretical practice to students, but to also provide actual work experiences to students as they learn and develop the base foundational education skills. It is this fundamental knowledge that will help them to be successful throughout their careers. “When will I ever use this?” is one statement that we hear from students, our own children, even write ups on the internet. It is vital that as students are learning skills such as Reading, Writing, Math, and Science, that they also have a chance to apply this knowledge in industry-based projects and opportunities.
That is the focus of what my teaching style and philosophy is. Within the courses that I teach, I will foster lessons in which the students are able to see how these skills are used in practical industrial application. The focus will be on providing them with the opportunity to solve “real” world industry problems from the high-tech industry from known companies.
The lessons will be project based and will foster collaboration and teamwork between students and will allow them to understand that there are multiple ways to solve these issues and meet project requirements. By taking this approach, students will learn practical application of these foundational skills and they will also be developing critical thinking skills as there are multiple ways to resolve these projects from industry.
Taking this project-based approach will help to increase student confidence in their abilities to solve “real” world business problems while providing them with insight as to how these skills are applicable in everyday life. My plan is to prepare the students to understand that their careers are an opportunity to be life-long learners and that these foundation skills learned in class will help them to achieve their goals.
