Class overview

Welcome to Vale Middle School!  In English Language Arts, we focus on five things - reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening.  

We will read a wide variety of genres from novels to short stories and articles.  Those pieces of text will be analyzed for content and structure with comprehension as the ultimate goal.  Various thinking charts will aide our comprehension of the texts we read. 

Our focus in writing will be on informative, argumentative, and narrative styles of writing.  Sudents will also write summaries and other short contructed responses as they respond to the texts read in class.

Exploring the English language and its structure will give students the ability to share their ideas in clear and concise writing.   Students will build their sentence fluency by using a variety of sentence structures.

Reading allows students to go on adventures, to learn in other subject areas, and to be introduced to others' ideas.  Writing allows them to share their imaginations, knowledge, and ideas with others.  Speaking and listening are extensions of reading and writing.  

My goal for this year is that the students in my class leave with a greater appreciation and love for words!
