What are the Different Instrument Families? 

Musical Instruments are split up into different categories: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Voice, Percussion 

In the elementary school music program, students can choose from the first four and then percussion options open up in middle school. Students can choose from the following instruments in the elementary program: 

• Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello 

• Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet

• Brass: Trumpet, Trombone

• Voice: considered an instrument, we all have one and carry it with us everywhere :-)

Considerations when choosing an instrument: 

• The student should choose the instrument who's sound they like the best-NOT what their parents or friends think they should choose. 

• Every instrument presents its own challenges at the beginning stages, none are 'easier' than the others to learn. It just takes patience, your skills will improve with time and effort
