The 6th grade math curriculum is rigorous, with each concept building on the next throughout the year. Because of this, it is important for students to stay on top of their math work, ask many questions, and seek out help when needed.
Math assignments will consist of a combination of the following:
Classwork (completed over Zoom class)
Independent Work (completed outside of Zoom, similar to homework)
Projects (occasionally assigned to correlate with a math concept)
Quizzes (given periodically to check for understanding)
Tests (given at the end of chapters to check for understanding)
Students will create a math notebook (provided by the school) throughout the year to help grasp the concepts learned in class. Students will use their notebook as a resource for independent work and as a tool for studying prior to tests.
Independent work (essentially homework) are assignments given to students to complete outside of our live Zoom classes. Students will have nightly math work to practice the concepts we covered in class. These assignments are found in the planner (see planner page). Student's nightly math work that is turned in late will not be accepted.
The best way for someone to master a concept is to be able to teach it! Have your child choose a problem and ask them to explain how to solve the problem, step by step. If your child is able to explain their thought process for a given problem, they are one step closer to fully understanding the math skill.
Students should choose problems they have the answers to (examples in the textbook, homework problems that we reviewed in class, problems in their notebook), and resolve it on a separate piece of paper to see if they are able to correctly solve the problem.
Students should review any notes that were taken in their notebook.
