BUFFET
The 2025 annual exhibition of the Vaasa Artists’ Guild brings together a diverse group of artists under the theme Buffet. The concept is both visually and symbolically abundant, evoking ideas of plenty, variety, and the possibility of choice.
But what does a buffet signify in the hands of contemporary artists?
In this exhibition, the buffet functions as both a mirror and a method of inquiry. It opens perspectives onto individual memories and cultural identities, spanning experiences from abundance to scarcity and from shared social moments to intimate personal narratives.
Some artists approach the buffet as a social space—a site of gathering, sharing, and ritual. Others interrogate the politics of choice: who is entitled to choose, what is made available, and what remains invisible.
At a time when the world appears increasingly fragmented, the buffet emerges as a symbol of both connection and tension. It foregrounds questions of accessibility, privilege, sustainability, and inclusivity, while also touching on fundamental aspects of the human condition. Rather than proposing a single definition of the buffet, the exhibition creates space for multiple interpretations. It invites collective reflection on what we assemble, what we consume, and what it means to belong to something larger.
The exhibition has been juried by the Vaasa Art Association.
