Learning environments play a significant role in terms of study enjoyment.
In general, learning environments refer to spaces and places as well as communities and operating practices where studying and learning take place. Learning environment also includes the tools, services and materials used in studying.
Learning environments should support individual and community growth, learning and interaction.
All community members influence the learning environments through their activities. Well-functioning learning environments promote interaction, participation and common building of knowledge. They also enable active cooperation with communities or experts outside the school.
In the StME-project special attention was paid to facilities which promote low threshold physical activity and serve as fine breaks for restoring the study motivation during school days.
Inside the school building there can be e.g. table-tennis and snooker/pool tables or indoor gym. Also giant gym-balls, balance boards, stretching mats, skipping ropes, elastic bands placed in the classrooms serve as easy access motivators.
Outdoors there can also be outdoor gym equipment, disc-golf baskets and tracks, resting areas etc.
In addition to the school's indoor and outdoor activity spaces, nature and the built environment are utilized in teaching various subjects. Libraries, sport, art and nature centers, museums and many other cooperation venues offer diverse learning environments.
Learning environments should offer opportunities for creative solutions and for examining and researching issues from different perspectives. In addition, in the development and selection of learning environments, it is taken into account that students learn new knowledge and skills outside of school as well.
When designing versatile study methods and working methods, the learner is at the center. When building a learning environment, the needs of different learners should be taken into account and multi-channels should be enabled in the learning situation. The familiarity of the student group and the diversity made possible by the integrated learning environment create a "new kind of opportunity" for teaching. (Cisco.)
The use of several senses quickly creates a permanent memory trace. Utilizing multi-channels in teaching and learning supports different learning styles (visual learner, auditory, kinesthetic learner) and enhances the creation of memory traces (Dominica, 2012).
The use of several senses quickly creates a lasting memory.
