The best way to learn is to use all sensory channels and learning styles. These are realised in functional learning and student learns in a holistically by experimenting, researching and analysing. The student can move, play and do things by hand. Reflection and problem solving support the development of thinking. Research shows that also movement develops the brain.
In functional learning the student is an active subject. He/she acts together with others. The student can participate in various ways during the action, from planning and setting up the action scene to dismantling it. Thus, the student can effect on his/her learning. The student can learn different kinds of knowledge and skills. He/she also learns to assess his/her own learning in in the different phases.
An active and more comfortable school day is composed of various factors. Functional learning requires that both teacher and student are ready to throw themselves into action. At its best, the increasing movement leads to more meaningful lessons and better learning, and at the same time there is less sitting and more blood circulation. Through movement the studied subject/issue can be remembered better - also when doing an exam - when one can link the issue to the movement.
In a Dutch study (Blatt, J. 2014) children participated three times a week in mathematics and mother tongue lessons with integrated physical education. There were two kinds of physical activities integrated: those linked with the learning objectives and those which served as a break. After two years, students who had participated in these physical activities received better test results in writing and math tests compared to those who had attended ordinary lessons. The researchers estimated that the students who participated in physical activities were four months ahead in learning results.
Regular physical activeness effects the brain structure => Learning ability develops.
Physical activity conducted before a learning situation refreshes and develops concentration.
Movement integrated in learning intensifies learning.
THE STUDY MOTIVATION INCREASES => Students find working ways including physical activity as meaningful => The effect of positive emotions into learning.
Tolerance for stress increases.
The communication between different parts of brain becomes quicker.
The short and long term memory develops.
The aging of brain becomes slower.
Increase of creativity.
