Hi everyone,
One of the main reasons why the topic of the Armenian Genocide is so latent today, 105 years later, is because the scar has never been allowed to properly heal. To this day, the governments of Turkey and Azerbaijan deny the systematic killing of millions of Armenians, in an effort to accelerate the movement of Pan-Turkism that the Ottoman Empire had been implementing since some years before the First World War started. This ideology had repercussions not only on the Armenian people but also among Greeks and Assyrians. The German government, who was an ally of the Ottoman Empire at the time, has admitted their implication and actively recognized the genocide. Testimonies and images have been collected from all kinds of sources, and it is no longer a matter of perspectives. The genocide has been proven, and even Turkish historians have reached a consensus.
However, there are several political reasons not to admit guilt. Even though the modern Republic of Turkey is a separate state from the Ottoman Empire, it is its direct heir and it has inherited many of its platforms, and even government officials who participated in the massacres. In addition, war reparations could also be demanded from modern-day Turkey if they admit their involvement. Now, the Nagorno-Karabakh War only worsens the situation, because Azerbaijan is considered a “sister country” to Turkey, and if one is in bad terms with Armenia, probably the other will be too.
