Technology enhanced teaching and learning

Integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICT's) into the classroom has become increasingly essential in modern education, revolutionizing the way students learn and lecturers teach. 

In my classroom, I integrate technology and ICT's to enhance the learning experience and foster an interactive classroom environment. I use Powerpoint presentations to present my lessons, incorporating elements such as videos that make complex concepts more accessible and engaging for students. Additionally, I use educational software (such as Padlet) that allows all students to participate in the lesson. Padlet is a versatile tool that allows students and teachers to create digital boards where they can post text, images, links, videos and documents. When I started at UWC in 2022, three of my classes were still hosted online after the Covid pandemic. I learnt how to use Google Meet, as well as other functions within this platform. This allowed me to host classes online when circumstances forced us off campus (i.e student protest). Google Meet has allowed my students to work together on projects, share resources, and participate in discussions beyond the physical classroom. Furthermore, I utilize digital assessment tools to create quizzes and assignments, which streamline the marking process and provide real-time analytics on student performance. By integrating these technologies, I aim to create a more inclusive and effective educational environment that prepares students for the ever-changing technological world.

On 31 August 2023, I presented at the CIECT Annual Colloquium. The theme of the colloquium was "Blended learning, teaching, and assessment approaches and the use of artificial intelligence". The title of my presentation was "Implementing blended learning in the Afrikaans Foundation Phase classroom".

Using technology in my Foundation Phase Afrikaans classroom offers numerous affordances that enhance both teaching and learning. It provides access to a wide range of multimedia resources, such as educational videos which make learning about the Foundation Phase classroom more engaging and effective. Technology facilitates differentiated instruction by allowing lecturers to tailor activities and assessments to meet the diverse needs and proficiency levels of students. Additionally, online collaboration tools enable students to practice language skills through virtual discussions and group projects, fostering a sense of community and improving communication skills. Digital tools such as iKamva has allowed me to communicate with students regarding class times, assessments, and assignment feedback. It has also allowed me to track students' use of the iKamva platform.

Furthermore, technology encourages the development of digital literacy, an essential skill in today's increasingly digital world, preparing students for future academic and professional endeavors. Overall, integrating technology in the Afrikaans Foundation Phase classroom enriches the educational experience, making learning more interactive, personalized, and effective.
