The University of Washington Debate Society is UW’s only competitive speech and debate organization. Founded in 2022, we are a student-run team supported by two coaches and an executive board of student leaders. Our team brings together students from a wide range of majors, backgrounds, and experience levels who share an interest in public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration. Whether you’re new to debate or already have experience, DSUW is a place to grow, have fun, and challenge yourself intellectually.
We primarily compete in International Public Debate Association (IPDA) and competitive speech, with additional opportunities to participate in British Parliamentary (BP) debate. While BP is not the central focus of the majority of practices, members interested in exploring it (or other debate formats) are supported and encouraged in conversation with our coaches and president.
Our team practices twice a week, supplemented by workshops before major tournaments. Debate at UW isn’t only about competition—it’s also about building friendships and supporting one another. We host at a few social events each quarter to strengthen connections and make sure members feel like they're part of a team.
Our team is led by two coaches, a president, a vice president, and six student executives. While coaches and the president usually guide practices, leadership and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do. Our Director of Team Development ensures member ideas are heard and implemented whenever possible, so everyone has a voice in shaping the team. This approach carries over to our practices, where everyone trains and prepares together, making certain that no matter your background or experience, you're fully included from day one.
